City trash plan worth millions

Full story: El Paso Times

The city of El Paso wants the 600,000 tons of commercial trash that's now hauled off to a New Mexico landfill each year to stay in town and begin generating millions of dollars in revenue.

El Paso needs to do more to recycle, how about building more recycling plants that's if we even have one.I just don't mean for aluminum. I am talking serious work, like cardboard and plastic. This money can then be put back into the city by reusing recycled material. Stop polluting our Texas! That goes for me as well.

Susie Byrd is the perfect example of an unethical, crooked politician… She harasses and tries threatening the people who rise against her.The harassment and intimidation you have shown the people of El Paso is unbelievable. Federal charges need to be brought against you for oppression.

Too bad to see that Suzanne Michaels a former tv news anchor is now a hired mouth for El Paso Disposal. Great talent gone to waste.
El Paso Disposal is one of highest priced trash hauling companies in El Paso. Practically the only game in town.

It would be great if EP started composting its organic waste as well as stepped up its recycling efforts for items such as glass etc, and allowed recycling programs for apt complexes. If it creates jobs and maintains competitive prices, I cant understand why it would be so bad. Lots of landfills generate energy and if we can do it we probably should.

aaa, it's never going to happen here, guaranteed!
As long as we have elected incompetent buffoons whose main priority seems to be to legalize marijuana and continue to fleece the public with their onerous fees and tax hikes!
They mistakenly believe that raising taxes and fees is the cure all for everything that ails our pathetic city!
Have we ever heard any of our elected officials propose any new or innovative ideas on how to really make progress in our city and bring it into the 21st century?
The answer, sadly, is no!
Greed, avarice and look out for number one has replaced honor, integrity, and patriotism!
These venal politicians fight to get elected not for the betterment of our community ,but for their own personal gain and
our apathetic populace and voters are OK with that!
How shameful and pathetic is that?

El Paso politicians should be pushing to make us fossil fuel energy independent!
Why not make use of our abundant sunshine? Our gusty and prevailing winds?
Turn city buildings green! Install solar panels!
Encourage our local utilities to use wind power!
This change over will create many jobs!
The construction businesses will flourish, creating jobs, solar energy companies will spring up creating more jobs, by creating a demand for solar technology and products!
So too will the wind energy companies! They will need manpower to build the windmills and the raw materials, to build them, thus igniting our economy and spurting it to strataspheric heights!
Where is the innovation the pioneering spirit!
Where are the thinkers and innovators?
Our leaders have failed us miserably, and we should hold them accountable for our lack of vision and progress!
We deserve and demand better from these so-called leaders!
So to you mayor Cook, aldermen and women, county commissioners and any other public officials on the public feeding trough, and all you bottom feeding government leeches, I say to you: lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!
We cannot afford you buffoons to hold us back any longer!

Sorry for the errors!
The following should have read:
"Where is the innovation, and the pioneering spirit(?) question mark and not (!) exclamation.
"Our leaders have failed us miserably, and we should hold them accountable for.. THEIR,(NOT OUR), lack of vision and progress"!

Appreciate your concern for grammatical correctness, FEDUP. Also, Suzanne Michaels is not employed by El Paso Disposal, Basura, but Camino Real Landfill.

when will el paso realize that the socialistic ideology of reps like miss byrd is crazy. i have no problems with putting more landfills here in el paso and outside of el paso and having someone compete with el paso disposal. however, if all this is about taxing these commercial haulers to get more revenue for the city , then all i see is my el paso disposal bill going up. the local dumps in the city should have to compete with the ones in new mexico. its taxing like this that made western playland leave to santa teresa. now we have a stormwater tax, a larger impact fee tax, a waste management fee tax on our water bill, and now a garbage tax. when will it all end ? hopefully this friggin may.

Susie wants more trash in El Paso, I dont.

Susie Byrd just wants to make the city money and they are grasping at straws.

Instead of making more landfills we should be talking about using less packaging and reducing our trash output, not filling up more landfills.

I dont want anymore trash in this city, how are we supposed to become a high tech city with that.

Maybe I just dont understand the logic, or maybe the piece is badly written.

But it says Susie Byrd claims our city is growing fast so we need more landfills, which are expensive, so we should put more trash into city landfills so that we can collect more fees.

I read it twice.

Also:

Organic compost? Really?

Collecting methane gas?

Something about this article stinks.

I moved here from Portland Oregon 3 yrs. ago, and at the time there was no recycling at all here. The blue recycling can was a welcome site. In Portland they also pick up cans of organic waste (lawn clippings and other organic yard debris)every other week and this composted. Filled landfills were covered with a layer of plastic, then covered with earth. Methane from the decomposing waste underneath the fill was used for energy in nearby factories. By disposing of our waste correctly a lot of people could be employed here, for the good of all of us.

I got an idea! You know that site where Arsarco is located? Why not level that and put the new Dump there?
We wanted to know what to do about that site and there is the fact that the ground is contaminated. Why not just leave the ground as is and put a Dump in there?
Good idea?

didn't know that but it makes sense. I especially like the idea of the City picking up and recycling yard plants. My gardener charges extra for this :(

Pay for what you simp. Instead of us paying the NM landfill for dumping our trash there, we keep the trash here. That saves money. Plus we recycle part of whatever use to go over to NM, that recycled material generates revenue. That's why the CA company that ownes that land wants to sue El Paso. Because they are going to lose money.
Methane could be sold to users, i.e. more revenue.
This plan could actually help defer the 9mil over on the budget. Sounds like your full of gas. Before you type do a little research like reading the article you moron.
