Could this be a way for the city to raise our taxes by telling us that our home values have risen? They started raising our taxes and our values immediately when the rumor arose that home values have risen. Then when the prices were falling, did they lower the tax value? Not willingly. I say this is more Hogwash, Fleecing, to raise prices, taxes, and help in the collection of taxes that we see very little from. Probably just a ploy to raise their salaries AGAIN. Ex. PSB! THe only thing we see more of are the Tumbleweeds rolling by!

Look at the other markets that went up. It is purely a function of which markets are undervalued. All those are markets, like El Paso, that are dirt cheap. They will tend be more realistically priced, or bubble-proof in such times. I would not read anymore sinister motives than that.

The picture is not as pretty as you paint it. Home prices continue to rise or keep a steady pace because of Ft. Bliss and Mexico not El Pasoans. Ft. Bliss soldiers keep coming into El Paso and for them El Paso offers affordable homes. Mexicans are selling their properties in Mexico because of the instability and violence there. For El Paso citizens, this is bad news, because our property taxes will keep going up, infracture can not keep up with the growth, and we are still without good paying jobs. Is this good for El Paso? Only for the appraisal district, and anyone else making a buck. El Pasoans still keep struggling just to keep off the floor from the botton of the food chain. Not so pretty, huh?

the only reason home sales are doing better here is because any mexicans with money are moving over here.
they are moving out of the battle zone.

I can't see how this could be when I had a contract to sell a house 8 mo. ago for 6000.00 more than it's listed now and my Realtor Called yesterday and wants to drop it another 5000.00-8,000. Taking into consideration no one wants to pay a fair market price (The house is not overpriced), they can't pay their own closing costs because they haven't saved for the purchase of a home, can't get financed because they have bad credit or too much debt which were the reasons my deal blew 8 mo. ago and the market is over saturated with 4400 houses, I call that a bad sellers market. This article contradicts everything I have been told by every Realtor I talk to. Of course, the house I am selling is never worth the asking price, but the houses I have looked at to purchase are always worth the ridiculous price the builder wants at least according to the Realtors.

More HOGWASH by the realtors, city, county and the CAD!!!
The EP Times is so gullible they won't investigate to see if those figures provided by the realtors and the CAD are real or they were just pulled out of their hineys and merely fabricated!
There's more of gravy than there is of grave about this whole thing!
This newspaper is filled with so many incompetent, so-called reporters, that it's laughable, if it weren't so sad!
They are all colluding in an effort to spurt a dead real estate market to life, in an effort to continue the public fleecing!
This BS good real estate market in El Paso is merely a dog and pony show, don't buy into it!
The recessi0on is real and is spread far and wide across the entire country!
People are struggling to pay their mortgages, put food on the table and are barely hanging on by their fingernails!
How many of you have actually sold your homes for more than the asking price?
I'm willing to bet my house that the count would be ZERO!
Don't be fooled by these mendacious buffoons that want you to believe otherwise!
They spread their lies until they make you start believing them!
What makes us so special and recession proof?
Why is there such big glut of homes in the market? Why can't people sell their homes?
Realtors continue to ask sellers to lower their asking price, yet the CAD raises property values?
Why only yesterday the headlines read, "Home foreclosure filings in EP tripled in January"! What's wrong with this picture?
People, we are being taken for a ride!
The wool continues to be pulled over our eyes!
Enough of the BS, tell us the truth for once!
well okay

This article is garbage. I looked into selling my home a few months ago and they told me it would cost me well into the five digits just to get it off my hands. Does that sounds right? A realtor friend here in town told me to wait until "this blows over."

A house on my street and another on the next block have been on the market for over a year. We're not bucking any trend.

Gustavo, would you please make up your mind already!
Is our EP economy booming or not?
Where in the name of heaven are you getting your information from?
You are aware that El Paso is in the,... United States?
That we are also feeling the effects of the recession? That we are not immune?
Makes me wonder whose side you're really on, big business or the public's!
Why are you disseminating false and misleading information through your newspaper?
Oh, I forgot, your business is,.. to distort the headlines and sensationalize them in order to increase your readership!
Sorry, what was I thinking?

The homes are apprased by the city and guess what ?

They want more money, my neighbor's house is for sale and no one will give hime what the appraised value that the city says is worth. Cmon give us a break I think people are smarter than to fall for this lies.

well just some food for thought, newly built houses are being sold faster than older ones.

Who wants to buy an old house when they can get a brand new one?

Older houses are more likely to be overlooked by new homeowners.

Jut thought that your story could be explained that way...

Very true and they are buying cardboard house that start falling apart a right after the 1 year builders warranty expires. I install a certain utility and these houses are absolute low quality. The combination of the material and the unskilled guy from Juarez holding the hammer will result in many lawsuits in the next 10 years because these houses will be crumbling. I really feel sorry for new home owners. I finish their house and had a very difficult time installing a box because I drilled into the house the stucco crumbled like sand. The paint is what's holding it together. Just my experience every day at work.

oh I believe it. my parents finished buying ahome very recently and found lots of structural defects with it, because windows and doors weren't installed properly and such. These massive home developers know how to turn a buck and mass produce those houses while using the lowest paid workers.

But homeowners always seem to gravitate towards that because they believe its "new" and therefore superior to the ones already on the market.

Put the blame on the AMERICAN contractors that hired the cheap labor and the AMERICAN building inspectors that approved the structures according to code??? What about the materials??? Where they manufactored?
