Wow, the new St Paul city slogan, "St Paul, the mini Manhattan, without the culture, jobs, and vibrance".As always, the right-wing fearmongers are trotting out their usual suspects. It's pretty tiresome.
Downtown St. Paul has been mismanaged by polititicians, no doubt, and most but not all of them were Dems, no doubt. But putting in a bunch of Repubs who merely sign sweetheart deals with CEOs isn't going to change a thing.
Land economics and the freeway system spell the end of both Mpls and StP no matter who is in charge. It simply costs corporations less to operate in Anoka or Eagan.
What St. Paul needs is a light rail from St. Thomas down Grand Ave. and down to Lowertown. This would create a gourmet ghetto downtown, and a lively street life all along the line. It won't happen, because the Summit Hill snobs won't have it. But if it did happen, companies and their employees would think twice about moving to the burbs. Downtown, enlivened by professionals and college students, would prosper.
Think of Manhattan. It's a very expensive place to do business, but many corporations stay, because of the cultural amenities. St. Paul has the potential to be a mini-Manhattan, but shortsightedness on the part of all its (dem and rep) politicians and many of its citizens block a better future.
