In it, Detroit Free Press reports that:DTE Energy would like to offer an opt-out program for customers who don't want to have the new advanced digital meters installed due to concerns about radiation and privacy issues The Detroit utility has proposed charging such ratepayers an $87 onetime fee along with a $15 monthly, pending approval by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

They have to offer something to keep the PSC happy. So they come up with this over priced plan so only the most paranoid will go for it.

It's not an over priced plan. When they change the majority to remote meter reading,those who opt out will have to have a meter reader come out to the house and manually read the meter and take back and load the info. The fifteen dollars will not cover the vehicle,gas,meter reader labor,and extra expenses incurred for doing it the old way. Fifty dollars would be a more realistic cost. Radiation? Your microwave,television,cell phone,and your laptop put out more. Why not throw all that out to protect you from your radiation phobia.

I read a study earlier where cell phone radiation at a level used by humans produces reversal and prevention of Alzheimer's in mice. Perhaps DTE should charge extra for the new meters!
