In reply to your DG info system, THERE IS NONE.... Unless one is a corporate member at the very top, or one of their attorneys. Information trickles down from the corporate offices to the stores and distribution centers. That info then gets fragmented out. Every scrap of info is treated top secret as far as their operations are concerned. I'm sure that the DG employees have a huge archive of information they could tell you about though, good or bad. The employees are DG's main course of information anyhow...someone always talks, even the managers and supervisors. I wish you extreme luck with your assignment!!

Dollar General actually has some sophisticated systems to manage their business.

The merchandising group uses a forecasting system to predict demand and merchandise flow based on historical and predictive analysis.

The Distribution group using WMS tracking systems to manage the picking and tracking of merchandise. Can't remember the name.

The company IS function overall uses the server concept vs. mainframe concept and satellites at each store to collect store sales, orders, and inventory counts.

The HR group uses an HR package to track employees, benefits, compensation, and the people development system is AIM (Advanced Information Management.

I have been with the company 5 yrs, and I am going to tell you , that dg's bsr(basic stock replenishment) does not work! It is supposed to be a system , where the manager scans on-hands,( to tell how many of a product ) and that way they will know how many to send from the dc (distrubtion center). But, it doesn't matter if you scan the whole store! they will still send, 5 things of one item, when you only needed 1! All DGs backrooms are so filled with stuff that will never be used! They need to go to a system that allows the manager to order exactly what they need! and maybe the stores would start looking better!

I know that most managers for DG are bombarded with Freight dgclerk but I don't necessarily agree with you. I manage a store in Florida and my back room is cleaned out I have nothing but 3 u boats of overstock a crusher and some empty roll tainers. I have personally trained my sales associates, am informed whenever a product won't scan, etc., so that no merchandise leaves the store or enters without being scanned. My replenishment is great. A lot depends on the sales associates, and DM because I have had my DM change the weeks out standard on some items that were inaccurate. Whenever an item will not scan I notify ERC and then the UPC is added to my downloads. It took tremendous work at first but well worth the effort.
