How to get a job at DG:

-Be willing to work for slave wages because after u work an 80 hr week, that 30k job only pays 7 bucks an hr.

-Expect substandard benefits like medical insurance that takes 200 bucks a month from your pay and pays 35 bucks on an office visit leaving you with a $300 bill.

-Tolerate a manager structure who treats you like ignorant migrant farm workers

-Work holidays and don't expect family time

-Prepare for Employee Relations Center to treat your complaints like a bother

-Expect to be harassed by your District Manager and Regional Manager

-Don't EVER expect to see a bonus as a manager because they will bone u out of it

-EXPECT to get canned if you show ANY motivation or initiative of your own

If you can deal with all this you too can keep a job at Dollar General like to retards at Bushnell Florida store where the Asst Manager is willing to act as the manager for 9 bucks an hour just to spoon with the new DM.

I can add a few comments. Be able to cover for thiefs in your store, especially your asst. mgr. because they are too hard to find. Be able to bullshit the district manager real well. Be able to fix the draw when it comes out short because you don't want anyone knowing especially the district manager. In order to be a district manager you really need to be stupid. Otherwise, the managers couldn't pull the wool over your eyes. I could go on and on about the stupidity of the manager I worked for but then again she is not the stupid one. Its the district managers that are stupid. Even when the inventory comes out so bad the district manager still doesn't find out all the thiefery that is going on at the store. So glad I got out when I did

This sounds just like the warehouses....where they tink you shouldn't have a life or talk at all...even if it is about work. AND you have to bend over when you come in the doors...if you know what I mean...LOL.The warehouse supervisors expect you to work like robots.but the last time I checked, WE ARE HUMANS,NOT WELL-OILED MACHINES!!!

I have been a manager for 18 months now and i have gotten 4 bonus checks and have not been cheated out of one yet. I work hard for what i make yes at first i worked the eighty hour weeks til i got an assistant manager who wasnt trying to take my job. i have done this with 3 small children and the grace of GOD. DG is not a bad company to work for. When i took over my store it was a hell hole it took me 6 months to straighten it out. If you are not a strong minded person then no this is not a job for u.

Wow - what comments! Sadly I can't say I agree. I've also gotten bonus checks left and right even in the first year of my store's business. Honestly, a job is what you make it - if you sit there and generalize about all district managers being "stupid" then that really says something, considering there are quite a few of them about and you've no idea about most of them. Sounds bitter and twisted to me, to be honest. Ah well, you can't win 'em all.
Sure, the pay isn't great to begin with but the promotional opportunities are great - for the right people. You're not going to get promoted or be happy if you're not good at your job, have a terrible attitude or aren't interested in you work, after all.

I love being a Store Manager, its taken a while to get my store where its at, but its worth, seeing the happy customers, and the max bonuses :) about the hours, hiring good, honest people really helps reduce your workload! I work my 46 hours a week

It's not that hard. Put in your application and wait for one of the people who were stupid enough to take a job with them to quit. I can say that because I was one of the ones who was stupid enough to take a job. After 1 year I got tired of being screwed over and taken advantage of so I quit. Seems to me the only ones posting who are happy with the company are managers. As a manager it probably isn't a bad job.

Great pay rates.
Any hours you want.
Sit in the office and bark orders.
Great yearly raises.
Yearly bonuses.(Given because their employees work hard) But what do the emps. get - 25 cents.
Multiply that by 10 hours a week =$2.50 per week.
That's about 1 gallon of gas!

So for a store manager I guess it's a really good job. But just a cashier - run if you can!

Go to the Regional manager. I know a store manager that goes over her district manager ALL THE TIME. She does it because she is a bitch and likes to cause trouble. But if there is really a problem that is an option.

How long does it take to get the results from those manager assessment
tests. I took mine and have been waiting 2 weeks, and still haven't heard
anything. I have called, and left messages, but no one responds

I have to agree with you there s' a good carrier start to get something better later.
But I know my Boss Wanda is doing her job right the store always so clean and neat, she was to get some bonus cheacks but never got them on time they allways Late like 9 months late they do seem to hold on to the money and they treat some people unfairly I am now working at one that has a temporary Manger and we both work hard to keep the store looking it's best, but her assistant manger makes more then her, what up with that?

I would like to say that you must remember that there is good and bad within every business out there. You just have to pick a company that you can handle the mess the best. I am not an employee of DG yet, but I am getting ready to accept a management opportunity with them. Some may ask why there?? Mainly, I have a family and in this economy, intelligent, hard-working people need a stable company. If you look at their statistics, they have a stable, money-making business. I personally think that if you are willing to make the decision to be happy having a place to make an income, then good things can come back to you. For the most part, it is usually bitter employees (a lot of times - that bitterness is brought on by their own attitude)that try to go online and feed a fire of hate on companies. If you do not like what you do, then find something else...life is too short for all the drama.

Contact the Corporate Human Resource Department.
If you have a 1 800 number to call that will work too. They do record your voice so have someone else call infor you and not from your area. Upper Management do get to listen to the recording and are told where the number originated from. So, with that said, be careful if you don't want to be found out that the complaint came from you and rish losing your job (no retaliation policy? Don't believe it. Your career is over. It's just a matter of time.
