Hey i have a 1999 24v cummins with and automatic tranny. when i shift it into drive, its idle goes up and down like its going to die on me. any ideas?

fuel filter.... or it might be in the fuel pump. the 24v went electric so it could be a sensor.. any smoke problems at idle or road speed?
