This is swell, but what about the millions of people who, for whatever reason, aren't cut out for engineering?

It seems like Obama is overthinking things, making them harder than they have to be. Why not encourage (maybe through an incentive program) businesses to take on young people as apprentices and interns? Encourage on-the-job training. Encourage companies to hire older workers based on life experience and maturity. Remove some of the emphasis placed on general college degrees. Many want ads that say '4 year degree' are for jobs that anyone with a few brain cells could learn. Let employees work their way up the company ladder the way businesses used to do it. Nothing is more frustrating to an employee than to work for a company for several years and have that company hire a college kid for a job that older employee could do in their sleep.

Obama can't seem to see the forest for the trees. Proof, once again, that you can't run a nation of average people when you're sitting on a pedastal of wealth.

Which high-tech jobs are these? The ones in which the workers were laid off or the ones not yet created? If the former why not rehire? If the latter just how are you going to create them with your policies of obstructing growth?

If it works as well as his Marxist plan that welcomes all illegal aliens, such as himself, everyone in the WORLD will have a job next year, at USA taxpayer expense.

"“The world has changed,” Mr. Obama said.“And for a lot of our friends and neighbors, that change has been painful."

Yes Mr. Obama, your change is painful, glad that you finally admit it.

"Mr. Obama met there with members of the jobs council he created. Two members of the group — Jeffrey R. Immelt, the chairman and chief executive of General Electric, and Kenneth I. Chenault, the chairman and chief executive of American Express"

Mr. Obama - Aren't Jeffrey R. Immelt and Kenneth I. Chenault "Fat Cats", you know, those guys you didn't go to Washington to support?

"It was unclear how Mr. Obama planned to finance his latest jobs proposals."

Unclear, How's that? Everyone knows how you will finance it, have you forgotten your redistribution of wealth plan Mr. Obama?

"The Plan would seek to marry private companies with colleges and universities "

hmmmm....this sounds weird. Mr. Obama, how will you decide which company marries which college/university? If there are more of one than the other, who will you put out of business to make the number even? How will you decide which indoctrination cirricula to follow?
Columbia/Harvard or Caterpillar/Cree ?

"After North Carolina, Mr. Obama headed to Florida, another crucial state for his re-election hopes; he has scheduled several fund-raisers as part of his effort to raise a record $1 billion during this campaign."

You did so well in NC, you drew a HUGE crowd at your $44 per seat fundraiser in Miami - 900 people showed up at a 2200 seat venue. WOW - what a following!!

"On Tuesday, Mr. Obama is making a rare visit to Puerto Rico, as part of the Democratic Party’s campaign to woo more Hispanic voters back in the mainland United States."

Mr. Obama, you may want to re-think that and save some fuel & carbon emissions - you only got 900 people in Miami to come and see you. The Hispanic thing may not be working...

That's what "trickle down" really does.

It diverts money from the USA, from American jobs, to cheaper, less safe and regulated foreign facilities.

It is not the workers who sold their jobs down the river; it was those who most benefit from the offshoring of US jobs, and also their venders here.

The US Tax Code provides benefits for the offshoring of US Jobs. Get rid of the incentives to do that and create incentives to keep jobs here. How hard can that possibly be?

well, that, ending the stranglehold the epa has on manufacturing, and, tempering the unions...

we COULD be competitive...then again, we COULD be energy self-sufficient.
there IS a reason we're not...

and it's NOT taxes.

I believe it was 10,000 engineering jobs Obama was offering. Naturally, he is clueless. Thanks to the mantra that "everyone MUST go to college," there is a glut of college educated people, many with wonderful qualifications but no offers in sight.

One of my former students graduated from Boston College with an engineering degree about six years ago. He held a few entry level positions in engineering but was let go from them as the companies downsized.(Read sent operations overseas.) He went back to school for teaching credits and was fortunate because of his own abilities and the background from his original career goal, to be hired as a calculus/physics teacher at about a third of the salary he might have been making had he been able to remain in engineering.

In Pennsylvania, there are Bucknell, Lafayette, Pitt, Penn State and Lehigh, just to name a few, that offer engineering degrees. Nearby, there are Rensalaer, MIT and Rochaester. I don't have an exact accounting of how many engineering degrees were granted this year alone, but considering the size of some of these schools, it surely runs into the thousands.

It is not for want of engineers that we suffer. It is for an overabundance in this and almost every other professional field. Obama's cavalier comment about shovel ready jobs not being exactly what he had hoped for with his wild and crazy spending does nothing to improve the lot of well-educated, unemployed or underemployed young professionals who are panicking as the payments on their school loans are coming due and they do not have the resources to pay the bills.

As each year passes without their being able to obtain work in their chosen fields, there is greater and greater competition for the few positions available. One wonders what the enthusiastic youthful voters of 2008 are thinking of "the Messiah" now. Things are looking pretty hopeless, not just for them, but for everyone else who is pounding the pavement looking for work.

Hope and change...hopes dashed and change is all anyone has left in his pocket.

We don't. However the Government and the Democrat Party need MORE people dependent on Government assistance to survive, thus insuring the continued party vote.

Bingo!

Until we fix the broken business trade paradigm in this country, there will be no long-term sustainable jobful recovery.

It looks to me that it's the GOP that wants everyone on government assistance, that is why they created the massive unemployment. Why create 400 million out of work if you don't want the problems associated with the crisis?

THAT IS THE BEAUTY OF laissez-faire Capitalism; you can make as much as you like, exploiting your neighbors and the environment; and nobody asks questions. De-regulation is another name for laissez-faire.

Under pure laissez-faire most of us would be actual slaves.
