question about cl ads and random spam emails from them

I am hoping someone can help me answer a question. The other day my husband had sent emails to criagslist ads for w4m. He said he responded to get taken off a mailing list because he was getting emails from those specific craigslist ads in his spam mailbox. We are on vacation right now and the ads are all local to where we are visiting. He says the location services on his phone is what is causimg it to be local ads that are emailing him. I've never had those kinds of emails sent to me, so my question is: is there a way for local cl ads like that to pick up location and email address while he is browsing cl and start emailing him at random without him innitiating it. He doesn't have a cl account that he logs into while looking at ads. His responses weren't a take me off your list response so I want to know if he is feeding me lies to try to get out of trouble for what he did.
