Buying & Selling on Craigslist, Avoiding Fraud, AND Legally Protecting Myself.

I'm considering buying broken laptops, repairing them and reselling them: and I'm wondering 1. what steps I can take to help insure that what I buy isn't stolen? and 2, what steps can I take to document that I am doing my best to avoid fraud? Note: This is important should I later resell a laptop that turns out to be stolen. And...I'm thinking that a signed bill of sale plus a copy of the sellers drivers license should suffice. But.... is there anything else I can do?
One other note: I have run one craigslist add seeking broken laptops and so far almost everyone that has responded said that they had a laptop in which they had forgotten the password - and this makes me suspicious. So...should I refuse to purchase such laptops and let these opportunities go?
