Canadian National to buy EJ & E

Canadian National to buy EJ & E

There are 44 comments on the Chicago Tribune story from Sep 29, 2007, titled Canadian National to buy EJ & E. In it, Chicago Tribune reports that:

“This transaction will improve rail operations on the CN system and the rest of the Chicago rail network by moving CN trains out of the urban core to EJ&E lines on the outskirts of the Chicago metropolitan area”

Seeking to sidestep Chicago's notorious rail congestion, Canadian National Railway Co. on Wednesday agreed to pay $300 million to acquire most of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co., a regional line that rings the metropolitan area.

The deal, which Canadian National said 'fills the last gap' in its trans-Chicago network, is designed to let the company bypass much of the urban rail traffic that has long served as a choke point for railroad operators.

A spokesman said the company hopes the acquisition will allow Canadian National to eventually vacate an existing downtown route known as the St. Charles Air Line, which has long been the source of friction between the railroad and local residents and developers. Read more

How sad for the EJ&E employees they stand to lose their good jobs and working contracts. CN gobbles these small hard working railroads with our goverments blessing. I work 12 to 15 hour shifts with little to no rest for the CN.

As a retired E.J.&E. locomotive engineer, I can't believe that the Cn and other railroads belive that throwing more money at their employees will take care of everything. While the CN engineers contract of 6/10's $103,000.00 a year looks good to someone earning $40,000.00, one has to consider the quality of life! It ain't always about the money. The now J employees will fit right in with this take over, some of the most greedy people I ever knew! I hope they get everything they deserve. I hope for sure ALL of the E.J.&E. management get what they deserve, the trash can, nothing but a bunch of yes men, suck asses and hatchet men, now they get the AXE!

as a union officer on the CN railroad, i can tell you this, the eje people need to really be worried. this company cares about nobody but the dollar. and as far as the managers on the eje....who cares. the CN has their own yes men and suck asses. so i hope these so called managers are out of a job, they are the ones that chose to run around and play manager.

My husband has been employeed by ej&e as a machinist for 28 years. Everyone (management) keeps talking about how good this take over will be...my husband is very worried. I would like to hear more from the guys actually emplooyed with them.

i also work for the j and hear that kirk yard is supposed to be improved to handle more traffic. the talk of an intermodal replacing the yard is just that, talk.. cn wants to somewhat copy their memphis classification yard in gary to handle up to 2000 cars a day. there was talk of dovetailing seniority but no other road that cn has acquired has done that. one of the big questions, is what about carnegie?? what about the gary railroad? is it going to be represented by the BMWED or another union?

tmypike, i've heard the same from management saying how good the takeover would be. but from management that only has a couple of years left.. under the new york dock.(from my understading) supervision is promised two years of work, but i don't think its guaranteed in gary. also, if they don't take the job they get bought out. a person in management is getting quite a bit more carnegie than you and me. add that to their buyout and a takeover sounds pretty good especially if your close to leaving. as for your husband with 28 years. he's fine since cn doesn't dovetail seniority. the question revolves around carnegie?? do we still get it or will it be frozen like the dmir????

I really don't want to sound bitter. I have been a conductor for 32yrs seen many take overs ect. not once have I met or heard of any RR.s getting carnegie or ny dock. Remember if jobs are available you must relocate. CN will pick us off one at a time look at the hourly wage the WC got fooled into. now cn uses this to cram it down its other hard working employees..

grs as for as i know the carnegie is frozen. The word is uss and the cn are working together so no one can collect thier carnegie if they decide to go with the cn.As for as iam concerned if i go with cn then i don't have anything to do with uss therefore i should be able to get my carnegie.

socko, i understand if jobs are available you must relocate,i hear that the majority of the people will be able to stay in gary or joliet for the fact of all the work and traffic. JRT i understand your comment also, what would worry me is how many years of service do you have. your entitled to whatever is in carnegie, but uss isn't going to give it to you, they are going to sit on it until you are 59.5 so that they can make money off of it. also, if you go to uss are you still paying into railroad retirement? i think this is an important question for people especially with years close to retirement. these are just my opinions i by no means have any insider info. i just wish the cn or somebody would say something that is concrete.

just so you know when they took over IC where I started we kept are senority the people that came down from Battle Creek from the GT were dove tailed in along with the people from WC when they came down I am almost positive they will close the repair shops and move you to there shop in Ill. It doesnt make sense to keep them open when there is a major repair facility right off there main lines as union employees i wouldnt get to worried as management well you on your own

i heard the roundhouse in gary is staying, who knows how many people though, because what the roundhouse in the mill can't handle they will do in kirk yard. us steel is selling the j, but they want to make sure that they can still move their steel.

The question is do you stay with Gary Rail or go with CN? How is CN to work for? We have excellent medical ins. with the J. Having 28 years in, you don't want to make a decision you are going to regret.

How sad;I just heard that the cn told management to not say anything to the employees about anything until everything is signed sealed and delivered after the first of the year.I think something stinks about this whole deal because we have no idea as to what we should do'Go with gary rail or to the cn.

that's old news jrt. that's customary in acquisitions because management knows we would talk to everyone. tmypike, who knows..until we hear more facts and not rumors we can only worry.

Iam not to worried because i have my time in but the young guys that have small children and young wives that don;t understand what railroad life is all about will have to suffer when husbands are never home because it will be only about cn;s profit margin.

when they took over the w.c. they relocated all their people from the fond du lac, wisconsin roundhouse to harvey, illinois. our engineers on the wc have been without a contract for over 2.5 yrs and the company took them to mediation. they will force the hourly wage down your throat. they do not care about their people, so please do not believe their B.S., all the wc crew callers are having to relocate to harvey and do not get hurt on the cn, they will send you an investigation letter and try to starve you out. we used to have good insurance on the wc, now we have the national plan, we had a good short term disability plan and they reduced that. the cn will come in all buddy, buddy the first few years and then they start cutting away and violating your agreements every chance they get.

Well, none of the comments about the CN has been very good. That should tell us something.

An article today says more than 2,000 trains a day would come into kirkyard and CN's East Joliet Yard would shift some repairs to Kirk yard so it dosent sound like the machinist will be going anywhere.
