CN Whines

CN says striking conductors' wage demands too high

Oh really. I think not. Not after record profits and cost cutting that has reduced jobs and has resulted in numerous accidents that endanger their workers, the public and the environment.

UTU asked for wage increases of 4.5 percent in the first two years of a three-year contract and 4 percent in the third, CN said. "The UTU's final offer on lump sum bonus payments - C$1,000 ($840) per year over the three-year period - was three times greater than the other recent agreements," CN said.

Ah. cry me a river.

CN is demanding a flat wage rate. Where it has won those concessions in the U.S. the rail workers are now doing twelve hour shifts. Gone is the eight hour day.

Report on Business Top 1000 listed the productivity of CN workers,

So each worker at CN produced a gross revenue of over three hundred thousand dollars for the company and made CN a profit of $74,000 each, thats after their wages, benefits, company taxes etc. had been paid out.

After all labour produces all wealth, all wealth belongs to labour.

Here is CN's ten year stock chart.

Not exactly boom and bust, just one long boom.

Paid for by CN workers and CN's disregard for public safety.

And while CN whines about paying out $1000 signing bonus spread over three years, thats a big $333 a year, to their workers, here is what Hunter Harrison earned in 2005.

He is the second highest paid CEO in Canada.

That means Hunter earns a cool $29,281 a day!!! While begrudging CN workers a measly 4% wage increase and a pitiful signing bonus over three years. Yet each worker produces a profit of $74,000 each, which goes to Hunter and his Shareholders.

Ain't capitalism grand.

Hunter says traffic is moving the same as it was pre strike. Who is he lying to? Employees?? I don't think so, they all know the difference between 6 to 9 trains a day leaving town compared to 25 to 30. Is he lying to management? I doubt it. When they take a trip and they see every siding coast to coast filled with trains kind of hard to believe what Hunter Harrison says. Is he lying to the stock holders? Probably. Hmmm wonder what other lies he has been telling for the last so many years.

Hunter Harrison would sell his own Daughter in the street of Mexico if it would make CN shares go up.

But, What goes around comes around. There will be a day of reckoning even for someone like Hunter Harrison who deals directly with the devil himself

I resent your comments, especially the one about selling his daughter. I am his granddaughter, and you don't even know how generous and caring he can be. It takes thousands of people to run that railroad and not everything should rest on his shoulders.

To E. Hunters grand daughter. Since Mr. Hunter has takin over in the united states he has increased work hours from 8 hours per day 5 days per week to 11-14 hours per day. The work week was made 6 days per week with only one day off. Some times 7 days with no days off depending on how job turn over is. I could only imagine how generous he is to his family but to the real workers we are really forced too the maximum humanly posible. Mr. Harrison has special, "Hunter Camps" that all his managers must attend that explain how he wants his company run. The 1000's of people you mention take complete direction from his requirements. His business practices are the most vicious of any in the United States. The operating ratio is never been heard of in the industry and will probably never be heard of again because of all the cost cutting. No othere railroad is run nearly as lean and the workers are the ones paying the price. All from Mr. Hunters direction.

You blame this all on him. Is that fair to do? I understand that working conditions are not where you would like them to be but it takes many men to impliment change. You should really be blamming the shareholders. They elect the board and the board elects a CEO. Obviously you have never attended a Hunter Camp. He tells truly inspiring stories that call people to always do the right thing. I think you all forget that he started out at the bottom. The very bottom of the working food chain. He rose to the top because he did the right thing. If he can do it why can't you?

at a town hall meeting in battle creek Michigan Mr. Harrison was speaking about how things would be better in battle creek since then all he has done is shut a 7 million dollar fuel dock down. Pissed every worker off closed the most profitable engine house in the country down. Sent worker to Homewood Ill. We are running on equipment that is not maintained, broke up family's and is still going to close Battle Creek yard. He thinks that firing people will help morale, no one is happy the employees or the customers .

Morgan, as i respect your position to defend your grandfather, there are 2 sides to every story.

So far all of the employee's I have met from the last company that the CN purchased have a very different opinion.

As a CEO one has a resposibility to the shareholders, but why should the employee's carry the full burden. When a company erns over 1B in net profits, who worked all the hours to move trains, fix infrastuctur, and who profited?

In this instance, capital produces more wealth than the labor does hands down.. the return on investment is highly capital related so you can't expect labour to take credit for all the revenue and profits. If it were assessed at market value, CNR has at least 50 billion worth of assets (namely an international railway traffic system). Profits of 2,000,000 is a modest 4% return.

I know that's not the way they like to do things but if they examined their conscience and considered the impact on the people and the towns they'd do what it right.

I understand (first hand) the majority of your frustrations. I doubt that anyone would disagree that relocation, "broke up family's" and long work hours is nothing less than frustrating. However, I'm not sure that many of you realize just how good you have it.

There are countless amounts of people that would love to have the income, job securities, benefits, and opportunities that many of you have been afforded. Don't get me wrong, I KNOW that most (if not all) of you work your butt's off (and that's an understatement!!)

I'm definitely not trying to speak up solely for Hunter; moreover, I'm defending the entire railroad industry, the unbelievable opportunities it affords, and the leading company in the railroad industry. To be frank....you guys are unbelievable!

Instead of looking for things to moan about and fuss over, why not do 1 of 3 things:

1) Leave the railroad. If you don't appreciate the benefits, wages, opportunities, pension, and experience that it provides...then walk away. Go find another career. Trust me, there is a line of people that would love to have your job.

2) Take full advantage. Many of you have mentioned things like "cost control", "enormous profit(s)", "greed", etc. Maybe you need to start invest more in company. Take advantage of Employee Stock Purchase Programs.

3) Re-channel this negative energy into something positive. I am in the same situation as all of you. I work for the same employer and I am NOT in management; yet, I find it hard to complain about the company that I work for. The railroad industry, specifically CN/IC, has done nothing but goods for me. Yes, I work my butt off. But I take pride in my work. I enjoy my work. I enjoy the security, benefits, and income that it provides.

If nothing else, think about the latter.

Well joe i'll tell ya how good i have it,im disabled because of hunters slave mentality thinking.His number one thing is OPERATING RATIO thats where you put all the money in the shareholders and his pocket and not back into the rolling stock.He is not to well liked up in canada at all.

Obviously the B of D must like something he is doing or I dont think they would be continuing to ask him to extend his contract. Maybe you should be directing your comments to them or better yet why dont you just buy some stock and reep the benifits from stock prices going up and then maybe you wont be bitching so much

Then tell him to share it with all CN employees!! All CN wants to do is make profits for management, and piss on all the employees that work hard everyday in all weather conditions, while management sits in their offices crying poor mouth!!!

The union areed to this contract. Where else can you earn 100k with a GED. In case most of you dont know the IC was almost bankrupt before Hunter took over. The last CEO was selling off all the property the railroad owned just trying to keep the stock up.
