Of course they want Sheriff Norm involved early on to give the "New Radio Free" legitimacy.
Then when it takes off again, they'll kick him to the curb and steal all the profits, run it into the ground and start playing the same crap Star 101.9 plays!

I'm one of those hard-core listeners of the old RFH...I'm the guy that conceived, invented, and coded the first online RFH balloting system (in Turbo Pascal, even!). I must admit that I was super excited when I heard about RFH coming to HD-Radio; it prompted me to contemplate the purchase of an HD radio receiver. Visions of the old days waltzed into my head -- the run down studio in Waipahu (where I worked for a couple months as a sales rep, practically giving away airtime spots because we weren't ranked high enough on Arbitron), Big Mele concerts at Kualoa, smaller concerts and dance parties at Afterdark, and the seemingly discombobulated music format that was simply the sheer genius of "Sheriff" Norm Winter...at the helm spewing his anti quid pro quo philosophy. I'm terribly disappointed this new station is just the opposite of what RFH really is about; that it is a ripoff and not the actual brainchild of Norm's. Contrary to what some might think, "playing different kinds of music in a shock radio format" is NOT what RFH was about. But if I need to explain to you what RFH is really about...then you just won't get it. I think I'm gonna hold off on purchasing that HD radio, for now at least.

If "Sheriff Norm" Winter doesn't have 100% creative/programming control then this resurrection of RFH will be just another marketing ploy by Big Radio...and it will last for exactly as long as the music format makes money for CC or for as long as they decide to use it as a "loss leader" for some of their other projects.
Notice that they say that programming will be by the listeners and by "our programming people." Guess which group will get the final say???
Welcome to the real world of commercial radio, and don't assume that someone doesn't make similar decisions about who gets to play on "public" radio too!
Corporate radio as we've known it is going through major changes anyway as the result of changes/improvements in technology. More people are listening to distant radio stations on-line, etc., or listening to whatever they download, etc. Learn about the technology, and you can do it too.
Back in the 1950s and 1960s, people in Hawaii could hear only what the local radio stations chose to let them hear. Those days are long long gone...and we're are a much more informed and sophisticated music market because of it.
Bottom line: Clear Channel (and the other broadcast radio conglomerates out there) plays what advertisers are willing to pay them to play. If you don't like what the Clear Channel stations are playing, don't listen. You have plenty of other options.

I heard the "countdown" show this morning. Kathy with a K was on and while she didn't say it was the Hawaiian Islands Music Report, she did read and play songs right off the ballots. I heard one of my songs! So, at least some input is being heard. Kathy is the only dj I've heard on the air tho. Is anyone else there?
