We had a large group of 14 people on a cruise and half of us ended with severe diarrhea and vomiting. We did notice. A lot of other ill people. What was it?

Our little guy ended the cruise the same way.
The customs officer in Miami told us there was a virus on board and that about 80 people reported that they were sick.

Thanks Matt for responding. We did not report it as everyone got sick Friday night and we of course left Saturday. I know how sick they got so I hope your little guy gets better soon. From the research I did it sounds like the norovirus. Make sure the poor little guy gets lots of fluids.

My Mom, cousin and I were on the Carnival Victory 3/4-3/9 and fortunately did not suffer any illness because we are all recovering from other illnesses are especially VERY careful about what we eat, drink etc. We did not enter the filthy Lido deck main pool that was finally shut down on day 4 for "sanitation". Many of the guests were so rude in the cafateria during the mass cattle feeds we bypassed that disease factory as well. You did not enforce the no swimwear rule in the dining areas as I viewed many "cheeks" and bare chests in the food lines during my morning and afternoon exrcise walks.

In spite of the couple in the next cabin who thought bringing an 18 month old screamer on a cruise was a good idea, our vacation was spent mainly in our cabin reading, napping and watching television when not on the balcony enjoying the ocean WITH HEADPHONES ON. Our meals were taken in the dining rooms maily because the staff was really rude and curt. So I want to thank you Carnival staff for your rudeness and unfriendly behavior as you saved us from some physical misery. If the staff were not so busy practicing poor customer service they should have suggested all passengers practice increased sanitation measures to avoid contracting a virus BEFORE leaving the ship, as we were informed of the virus on the bus transporting us to the airport. Learning how to properly and effectively communicate with people in this situation was an ETHICAL and LIFE THREATENING communication lapse on the part of Carnival. Hopefully the person requiring a medivac to Miami Dade lives to tell about it.

Hey,

yeah we (2) got it too and yeah there were a bunch of people looking pretty sick when we left the ship on Saturday morning....there were people vomiting in the ship or outside the cruise terminal. or myself in front of the rental car terminal...

Today 2 days later, our stomachs are still a bit off.

I wonder how one would go about reporting cases of illness now? It would seem that many cases would not have been reported as it hit on the last night and everyone was leaving the ship on Saturday morning. A colleague of mine has a similar story from the Liberty which docked and disembarked the same day in Miami. She reported that many people had the same symptoms on that ship.

My mother and I cruised on the Carnival Liberty March 4th - March 9th.
Friday morning ( Day at sea ) I got the virus and it was a full day of vomiting and diharea. I went to the imfirmiry twice. The staff was really nice and understanding. The next day,( Disembarkation day ) My mom got sick too. it was 7:00 AM , The announcments of disembarkation were starting and my mom was only starting the virus then. We did not think we were going to be able to get off the ship. It was the worst morning. Trying to pact our bags slowly while both being sick, we were rushed by guest services telling us we needed to get out of our room by 9:30 at the latest. We had no choice to return to the Imfirmiry because my mom needed medication. Later, the staff wheelchaired us to the carribean lounge, and our stuard met us there with our bags ( Very nice of them ) One staff member wheelchaired my mom out of the ship, and I was left with 5 bags ( 3 check-in and 2 Carry-ons) As he signaled other staff to come help us, They said they could'nt help. Well thanks a lot huh ! After a long walk off the ship & through customs, Carnival payed us a hotel room at the Hilton in Miami for the night and got us in time for our flight in Fort Lauderdale the next morning. They had made sure that we knew that they would refund us for any shuttle services/flight missed due to sickness and what not. We would like to know more information about this virus.

I too was on this cruise and feel very ill Friday night. Visited the infirmary Saturday morning where they gave me a shot for the vomiting and pills for the diarrhea. Barely made it off the ship in a wheelchair and am still recovering. Would like to know more about what this virus was.

My group of 8 suffered extreme illness on Friday night/Saturday morning. My sis went to the hospital today. Waiting on results. I heard there was someone who was isolated in her cabin and wasn't allowed to leave the ship to return home during disembarkment because of the illness. We all experienced extereme vomitting, stomach pain, aching and pain in muscles and joints, headaches and diarrhea.

Hey

Wolfgang already made a comment (see above) we both got sick friday night on the Victory.

FYI: I am now very sure it is the Norovirus also known as Norwalk virus.
I went to the infirmary Friday night and told them that I believe that this is a virus (I am a doc by the way).

Important to know you guys are contagious for up to 2 weeks!!! Hand sensitizers alone do not work - you have to wash the hands very good with soap and use hand sensitizer after that.

I am worried regarding the Victorys actual cruise - no way they got the ship clean within a couple of hours.

Is Carnival compensating any guests for their cruise?

I was on the Victory on 3/4-3/9 and became EXTREMELY ill Friday night. I could not even walk down to the infirmary, so one of the nurses came to wheel me down Saturday morning. I was given medication and sent back to my room and told not to leave until last call for debarkation. As I was being wheeled into the Miami port by staff, I noticed that there were already people loaded on the ship to take off on the next cruise. Disgusting. There is no way they had time to properly sanitize that ship!

My wife had to take our son to the hospital this morning. He is still sick.
She called Carnival to make them aware of the situation, as this began Friday night on their ship.
Because we did not visit the medical staff on board, they will not say it cam from the ship.(Though customs in Miami reported to us that over 80 people on board were sick.)
Also, Carnival will not investigate unless more people call and report.
So, please phone carnival at the 1-800 number and ask to speak to a customer service representative in order to make them aware of these illnesses. They likely need to do a thorough sanitization of the ship!

We just got off the phone and reported that 7 of the 16 people in the group came down with this norovirus. Although they stated that can't do anything about it, they did take note she said. We also stated we were concerned about the ship not being sterilized good enough before it went back out later that day. She said it was. I guess we will have to wait and see if they get sick.

. They do not compensate. Lost a lot of business I am sure as we had a lot of 1st time cruisers. They said they will never go again.
