I enjoyed Mary Ann Childers and Katie McCall on CBS 2 News. They were professional and did not serve up much spin. I totally wish them well. I hope they may be able to stay in the Chicago market. I wonder if FOX would consider Childers & McCall. Diann was pretty good too, but sometimes gave off the impression she was biased and cliquey. Burns may do well on FOX too. It might loosen her up. But I hope to see Childers, Burns, and McCall in some news venue. I have grown to trust their reporting.

I used to watch CBS when in Chicago. Ms. Childers was a class act as opposed to her husband, Jay Levine. I'll never forget the way he brushed me off one day as I cycled in the area of Northwestern Hospital. That day I had been working out and had jeans on at the time. I was not in one of my BB suits nor was I wearing my scrubs.
I wonder if he would have been more cordial to me had I been ceaned up. I have no use for a person that cannot treat everyone the same.
Sorry, Mary Ann - your husband is a class A-one jerk.

Last I checked, television, radio, print and online news companies are for-profits, not non-profits. It's all about the Benjamins, and always will be. If you don't like it, go found your own little non-profit organization and do news, if you think can you do better. It's a free country, DePenis.
Out of curiosity, is the same Sam DePino that was the news person at WGN in the mid 1980's? Used to enjoy listening to you late nights on WGN when the great Mike Rapchak had his show on from 11p.m to 5a.m. Wonderend what happened to you on the air?

Yes. Thanks for remembering. What happened to me on the air? I was fired. Happens even to the "best of us" LOL. Actually, I was trying to show my colleagues my having been a reporter and newscaster for the ABC Network wouldn't stop me from starting all over in the obscurity of overnight weekend work...just to show my sincerity and humility. WGN isn't any better place to work than WBBM. After that I left the business permanently and now have a 160 acre farm and historical house in central Illinois and no longer have to suffer fools. Of course, not ALL were fools...some, still working and some not, were outstanding and I was proud to work with them or know them. The best place I worked for in Chicago was WLS with the best news director in the world, Bud Miller!

To the person who used the Greek spelling of my name....get a life, please. Try to evolve.

I realize this is off the original stream, but I just wanted to say that I remember you as well, Sam, working with Mike Rapchak, and to Nancy, that I really enjoyed your father's program. I'm just back in the area after being gone for 12 years, and was sorry to read about his passing. I have fond memories, especially of the program he did around the holidays. I even made a tape which I still have (didn't always manage to stay awake all night to hear the program!) which included some interesting back and forth between Sam and Mike. Great stuff!

Ms. Rapchak,
Saw your comments to Sam DePino and just wanted to say that your father is truly missed by so many. His voice, style, and knowledge was truly unique and unfortunately nothing comes close to it these days on the air. Your father once sent me a tape that he made when he read a letter on his show that I had written to him. The letter talked about my memories of my late father whenever I heard the song "Girl Talk". He read the letter and it was so heartfelt. Then he sent me a cassette tape of the show. What a great person your father was! I am sure that he is up in heaven talking with all the great big band guys and also spending time with "Texas". Wishing you all the very best, and hope this note finds you well.

I post this years later sincerely interested in Ms Childers and her husband's current situation. And Nancy Rapchak. It would be nice to have an update on them so this doesn't continue to be a story without an update. Thanks for your service Mary Ann. News careers are filled with negatives, risks and challenges that seemed to me when I was in it, worth tolerating because journalism is such a high calling. It's a career for "givers" who want to do what Mary Ann did, SERVE the public. Unless one "hits it 'big' and becomes a well paid "heavy" it doesn't pay nearly enough for the sacrifices. I hope this finds Mary Ann and her husband prospering.

Mary Ann Childers, with that lovely, sexy face, blonde hair, sense of humor, and svelte body always reminded me of Superwoman.
