two years ago i had a new long block put in one of my gmc 8500 dump trucks. truck {a} i will call it.done by "cat" .when i got truck {a} back it seemed not to have the power the old engine had and did not have the zip. i called cat and they said let it brake in. over time i got use to it. then i drove truck {b} for a few weeks and i remenebered how the truck can run.so i call cat and they said that they would check it out but i will have to pay. i know the 3126 have 250 -300 hp how do i know what the hp is on mine.

i would say that it is leaking out a injector back into the fuel.i had one do that. used about a 1gal a day.

how large is your fleet? What kind of problems are you having and do you ever replace any of the engines? How many miles are on them.

Len, Caterpillar is always going to say that you are the only one that they have ever had a problem with. Been in the shop over 20 times in 340,000 miles with a loss of over $10,000 just in jobs lost.
How many miles are you getting out of the 3126 ?

try replacing the retun check valve at the back of the cylinder head.engine should run around 60psi at idle and 80 psi at high idle. when the engin sets the fuel will return through the check valve back to the tank.

i'd say your alternator(generator) has a problem with its charge voltage regulator. the engine idle sounds rough because your alternator is trying to overload the batteries hence creating excess parasitic load to the engine. and once you disconnet either one of the alternator cables the engine load decreases and the engine starts to idle normally (lighter or at higher rpm). i suggest you invest some money on a reman alternator from cat. hope this helps, cheers.

no, the alternator is good, I test it, but I test the truck with an external source (alternator disconected and conected an external power suply on the batteries, with regulator), and I have the some problems...if I give more as 26.0 - 26.3 v, the engine run very bad...

Have sterling truck with 3126 cat. Has no power with no engine miss. Codes are 164-11 injection pressure fault and 164-00 erratic injection acuation pressure. Have replaced injectors, pressure sensor, and heui pump. Have checked wire harness except at ecm and will do that next. Test performed: installed pressure gauge in oil rail and lap top (cat et) to watch injection oil pressure. At idle gauge will indicate 2000 to 3000 while lap top shows 1450 and the term DIAG displays on the graph. Any ideas? thanks

if the status bar shows "DIAG" it means the parameter exceeds its normal operating map (range). so either your sensor is not correct or the ecm has an internal faul. have you tried any newer flashfiles? also there have been cases where the sensor mounting nipple has blocked the small sensing hole inside the sensor mounting thread. you should check that the hole is in the center of the threaded bore. hope this helps

Thanks for your response. The sensor is new but will confirm that the oil passages are open. Im not familiar with flashfiles situation but will check on that. Since the IPRV is internal, thats why i replaced the pump itself. Was considering the ecm as the next step, but was looking for more info since i feel like im changing parts now and not performing a quality repair to the customer. Will post again after using your info and performing the checks. Thanks again.

I have a 2001 freightliner FL80 with a CAT 3126 motor (serial no. 8YL74893). The truck has an EATON Fuller 9sp transmission, model RT8709B. I need to add a small hydraulic pump (~12gpm @ 450 psi, 3H.P.) that runs whenever the truck engine is running; the two PTO mounts on the transmission do not work because the whenever the clutch is pushed in the pump would stop. I think one of my best options is to remove the air conditioner and put a hydraulic pump in its place. Has anyone done this before? Does Caterpillar have a factory option to add a hydraulic pump to the 3126 motor?

are you allready using the accessory drive slot on the front timing gear train? theres one slot just below the governor.

Yes. There is already an air compressor and a steering pump using that slot.

I bought an FL-70 in 1999 with a CAT 3126 engine and an Allison 3060 transmission. I've had very little trouble with the 3126 engine except for the fact that it seems a little under power. My truck weighs near 29000 lbs. Overall, I like the engine and transmission setup.
