I have a 2000 FL80 with the 3126. At 306,000 miles it dropped the intake valve in no.1 cylinderand cracked the block. The engine was replaced with a new 3126. 186,000 miles later it dropped the intake valve in the no.1 cylinded, cracked the block twice. Exact same thing. The engine is not a sleeved engine and cannot be rebuilt. I would not have another one.
The main reason it dropped the valve is that it did not have the initial valve adjustment (3rd to 5th oil change) and the valve "cupped" and then failed.

It sounds like you have a o-ring failure on an injector cup, or a cracked injector cup. This would allow coolant to leak into one cylinder only, causing a "miss" & burning the coolant, which causes the white smoke. Yes, it could also be that the head gasket is failing, but you only want to remove the head as a "last resort". Before you tear into the head & pull the injectors, perform this relatively simple test.

When the engine is cold, loosen all of the exhaust manifold bolts enough to "slide" the manifold away from the head at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Observe which cylinder is "wet" or leaking water/coolant. If it's not obvious which one is wet, you can try cranking the engine over, but don't start it. This will push fresh coolant into the cylinder. After you've determined which cylinder it is, you can have the injector & cup removed for inspection, without pulling ALL the injectors & cups!

If you find that the injector cup has NOT failed on that particular cylinder, then it's probably time to "pull the head" & change the gasket. Good luck!

The amount of blow-by you're describing is quite normal, especially for an engine with those miles. Keep in mind that the blow-by tube is the ONLY crankcase vent the engine has...all of the oil vapors from the pan & inside the head escape through that tube.
If you haven't already had the valves adjusted on this engine since you bought it, now would be a good time. The 3126 is "famous" for cupping intake valves when they are out of adjustment. The valves then break-off, get sucked into the cylinder & ruin the engine! The 3126 does NOT have removeable piston liners, like the larger Cat engines. Once you crack a cylinder wall, the engine is junk...it can't be rebuilt :(

If it's leaving enough oil to create a slick like you described, it's probably coming from inside the turbocharger. There is an oil seal in the middle where the bearings are located, and if it leaks the oil has no place to go but "out the exhaust". If could also be that oil is passing by the rings in one of the cylinders, but the most likely cause is the turbo. They're not cheap to buy!

I as a mechanic do not like this engine. I deal with a multitude of problems from various clients and this is the worst engine i deal with. I would not own one if it were given to me.

the 3116 was the worst and will never own another. I own a later model 3126 it has the stainless steel injector cups witch is much improved over the brass ones. As long as they are taken care of there are a low maintenance and a good engine the only down falls is that they are not rebuildable or super high powered engines. But they are reliable as of now I have over 300,000 miles on it does not use oil the only thing i have had to do to it was change the injector cups and injector O rings @ 200,000 miles and change the alternator.

<quoted text>The Injectors can only be checked in the engine using Cat ET and a cut out test.
I have been reading up on these injectors and I think there is a way to check the injectors outside of the motor: the solenoid can be checked by providing power to it and they can be done individually, the injectors would have to either have a head removed from a engine or a tool made for a single injector to fit in, and then the upper oil galley to be pressured with oil to the 800 something required and the lower fuel galley to be pressurized at the 30 something required and then hit your power to the solenoid. If the injector is working properly, you should have an atomized spray from the tip, if it dribbles, there's a problem.

Being that most people do not have a head laying around, which would be better, because all the fluid galleys are already there, and making a tool, according to the machine shop here would be around 150.00, you might choose to have them sent off and checked. It cost around 50.00 per injector.
