BP's costs on fixing well close to $1 billion
President Barack Obama, under fire for his response to BP's oil spill, promised Gulf Coast residents on Friday they would "not be abandoned," as the oil giant said it needed a day or two more to tell if its latest plan to stop the spill would work and the costs from the catastrophe approached $1 billion.
