I read with bemusement the reports last week about activists in Berkeley holding a protest rally and demanding that UC Berkeley end its 10-year, $500 million research program with BP, a program that seeks to develop plant-based fuels.

I listened to the protesters back in 2007. The protesters, then and now, are calling for financial transparency. Something stinks in Berkeley. The problem isn't so much what kind of research is being done, but who is going to be profiting. The protests are asking government to shed light on the business deals between the UC Board of Regents, Department of energy Secretary Stephen Chu, BP Chief Scientist Steve Koonin, Gov. Schwarzenegger (California), Gov. Blogojevich (Illinois). They are frustrated because all the men involved in this deal are above the laws of California. This is the problem as I see it, not so much the type research. BP scientists will be treated like tenured faculty in a time when layoffs and furloughs plague UC campuses. All findings will be property of BP not UC Berkeley. However, the research is not only plant based it is also petroleum based research as well. I am not sure that California needs BP's brand of science. The original gripe with th lab was the location. BP was poised to build the lab in Strawberry Canyon, which would be like building in the Marin Headlands as some Berkeley Activists. I am all for renewable energy, but can’t say the same for BP.
