I had forgotten the escalator at the Bon Ton downtown. it was the first in York back in the late 50s or maby 1960...and it was a real attraction for young people like me. I though "this store is so cool". they also had a really "hip" record department on the first floor. much cooler records than 'whites record shop" across the street. The Bob Ton Record department used to be a sponsor, along with Sol kesslers, on Doc Daughters Saturday morning show from 9 to noon on WORK radio.

York really was a fantastic place to grow up. Bon Ton, Bears, Weists, the jewelry stores, army navy store, the mens stores....and S&H Greenstamp store on W. Market. Outstanding music...
We were lucky kids and teenagers in my opinion. Tom the shoe salesman at Bears was top shelf, and the folks at the shoe store across the square.
We had it all, in a pretty big way.

Anyone remember a really wonderful and unique store called the Old World Import Shop? It was on Market Street and you went down steps to the basement level to enter. It was full of beautiful merchandise from around the world.

9 w market st was Gehleys carpet and furniture store, they employed their own installers until the late 50's
I worked there in summers as a delivery dept. helper. the owner was a mr. King that resided on Rathon rd. The store employed sales personnel as well as an in- store interior decorater (Mr. Hoke).I often delivered furniture on a trial basis. also sold were blinds, drapes that were custom made on site.

I remember the macaroni and cheese at Bear's cafeteria. Living in the country in the 50's and 60's, we didn't get to the "city" very often. But always we made it to the cafeteria after window shopping.

I agree about the sales people being more helpful. I especially remember the name of the saleslady at Weist's. Her name was Freida. Her favorite saying after trying clothes was "You look marvelous. Go home and tell your mother about it and I'm sure she'll buy it for you". I remember visiting the parrot at Weist's to hear him say "Hello.". Also remember the Dixie Cream Donut Shop, Lehmeyer's, Bear's, the Hub, and the shoeshine man in the underground rest rooms on the square. Downtown was the only game in town.
