Sorry south side, but the truth is your area of Columbus is a run down ghetto. And yes there will be no shortage of people that will respond to this post calling me stupid, ignorant and many other names. But all one has to do is look around, its obvious why any decent company would want out.
Instead of crying about Bob Evans' moving to a far better location, why don't you community leaders start working on cleaning up the crime, the trash and overall bad image that the south side has. Your first step will be when it comes time to re elect a mayor. Maybe a person that doesn't pander to the hood dwellers for votes!

Where's the outrage tea partiers? This publically held company just got out of paying a whole bunch of taxes! New Albany really is hurting for tax revenue, huh. I will never set foot in a bob evans again.

Hey Al or anyone else. I'm kind of new to Columbus, originally from Cincinnati. So please explain to me what the South Side reputation is. Also if you can define what is the South Side. Is it Grove City? Is it just the southernmost part of the 270 innerbelt or does it extend beyond there? Just not sure what that area is. I live in Blacklick, which is the easternmost part of Franklin County. If I were in Cincinnat that would be considered the Far Eas side, but I've been told that I don't live in the Far Eastside of Columbus. I'm confused????

Welcome to the world as the PROGRESSIVES HAVE MADE IT!

Unfortunately this is but one more sign that the inner-cities are NOT a place for business. For YEARS Entitlement Programs have RUINED those who live there and festered drug and gang problems.

In response to the loss of revenue from taxpayers living there the politicians have increased taxation on businesses. THIS IS THE RESULT! Look at Rubbermaid, American Greetings, and NUMEROUS others! This MIRRORS what has happened to our COUNTRY over the years... business moves to a more friendly environment (this might just be OUTSIDE the country).

As a TEA PARTY SUPPORTER I sincerely hope that a rising number of true FISCAL CONSERVATIVES being elected each opportunity will begin to change these DEMOCRATIC/PROGRESSIVE policies.

Instead of analyzing exactly why corporations make these moves, and than correcting what needs to be corrected a lot of Ohioans just choose to complain & stick their heads in the sand. This is how loosers like Coleman get elected, and reelected. Without the support of taxpayers from all over the state Columbus would be a wasteland. It getting a lot like DC.

It's really funny to see comments blaming everyone but the city administration. Especially since seeing all the cheap shots at at our Governor of only a couple of months. Why aren't public employees outraged about this loss.

I won't stoop to calling you ignorant, just your comments. From your ID i'd say your from the north side of Columbus and you're going to call the south side a ghetto..Look around, unless you're living outside I270 north of most areas are in a depressed state..

The empty shopping cart says it all. Bob Evans isn't leaving the area first- the shoppers did. Remember those fun trips to City Center, Easton, etc.?

You can not abandon the businesses and expect them to suck it up and stay in the crime and grime Frankly, I can not believe BE stuck it out so long...

I am a long time resident of the south side. Our motto: "The pride of the south side." It is nice to see Bob Evans Corp office stand behind the Welcome to Columbus Gray Stone on Rte 23. It mades me feel proud, but I must say once inside the feeling of being mugged in Great Southern Shopping Center is high. Pan handlers walking through Krogers and
Wal-Mart parking lots always asking me for money. A shooting in their own parking lot was probably the last straw. My home has been broken into once, my mother's home twice, my car has been stolen and a window has been broken out of my van. The south side needs another police station closer to us down here @ Obetz road. There was a cry from Bob Evans to put one down here, but the city states there is not a need. They would rather dress up the south side by putting trees, dirt, and curbs down the middle of a street. My property taxes hard at work. The people that don't do drugs and work need protected. Bob Evans has plenty of land down here to expand on for its future growth. No body will miss them anymore then me. The City of Columbus has let the south side down.

At least the mayor is pretending to care. Look at the west side, everything closed up long ago and now he's trying to stop the casino from opening. Amazing how those tax incentives are offered to one business and denied to another isn't it?

Has Bob Evans said whether the south side restuarant will close too?

Why does everyone keep saying vote Mayor Michael Coleman out or vote in another Mayor? Mayor Coleman isn't going to have anyone running against him this fall. Hasn't anyone been paying attention to that? Not one person thought they could challenge this clown. That is huge news to me. Not one republican and some random independent couldn't get enough signatures to put his name on the ballot. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a surreal universe. How could this possibly be true? SAD.

Sara, sadly this is all too easy to explain.

Those who benefit from the entitlement programs will come out in DROVES to vote to be sure your money continues being diverted to them.

The problem comes when there is a need to mobilize those who want to fix this problem.... The outcry (look at the SB5 nightmare... would you want Al Sharpton and a bunch of GOONS picketing your house?) from those leeches and those who support them tends to make MOVING easier than fighting! Look at Bob Evans!

Simply put... you can't help someone that's not willing to help themselves! Sooner or later it will complete the circle of self-defeatism.

I have lived on the south side most of my life and the crime is getting ridiculous. No one wants to live somewhere the don't feel safe and the same is true for businesses. I don't blame them for moving. It is what I am planning to do.

What is obvious to me is the whole tax system is broken. Why should I pay property tax when the person who bought a new condo down the street doesn't have to? Companies paid with taxpayer money to hang around?

The tax code for business, individuals, property is what needs to change.

My brother lived in that area in the Nineties. Everyone was looking to get out because of one reason, crime. People at the time were building nice houses just off Parson Avenue. But anyone living there more than two years was looking to escape. My brother’s car was stolen. The jerks used the two baby seat as blocks to set the car down on so they could steal the tires and wheels. You could not go to the great Southern Shopping Center without being mobbed by panhandlers wanting 50 cents for gasoline. His neighbor’s homes were being burglarized on a weekly basis. It is the same old story. A few criminals and few others committing anti-social acts thus driving everyone from that section of town. These people make up less than two percent of the population Meanwhile, city officials mumble something about doing all they can with the resources they have. Columbus has truly become a thug’s paradise because the chances of getting caught are nil.

All of inner city Columbus has turned into a run down high crime area not just the South Side. When you reference community leaders who are you referring to. We need help from the City and State to help get rid of all the inner city hood rats. As a life time resident of the city south side I am painfully aware of the deterioration of the area. I have to lock my car door when I ride though areas on the south side that I use to walk though as a teenagers without fearing for my safety. I also know that the south side have a high number of great people who have lived here and raised their kids to become productive members of society. Although I think you comment is a bit off colored I do agree that Coleman has to go. His idea of revitalizing inner city is to upgrade parks and put stupid flower planters up and down Parsons. The decline of inner city is due to the gang members and drug dealers that infest the area and know that basically they are running the show. Unfortunately it is against the law to kill, otherwise as a community we would have already banned together to exterminate those who have come in and destroyed our community. I personally would start with the bankers and investors that destroyed the housing market and then drive around and take out all the little sagging bottom street corner dope dealers.

I'm pretty sure corporate headquarters doesn't rely on local shoppers to stay in operation.

Mayor Coleman and his cronies have a long established policy of ignoring the south side, west side, and east side at the expense of the north end and downtown. You will continue to see businesses flee all of these parts of Columbus as a result of this deliberate policy of neglect.

Remember, big contributors don't live in these parts of town so no contributors are hurt so everything is okay with the mayor.
