I believe that he did not care. He just saw a chance to get a dig at Gov Palin. I don't care if you like Gov Palin's politics, religon, or anything else about her or not. Or any other politican for that matter. They pick the spotlight, they take the heat, no problem. They all have their kids on the podium, but the kids should be off limits until 21. They are growing up in difficult circumstances, cut them some slack. Few of us would have wanted the world looking over our shoulders when we were teenagers.

Regardless of anything else you must agree, even if grudgingly, that Gov Palin's daughter is living with her mistake, she did not take the easy out, have an abortion, tell no one, and pretend it never happened. She has taken responsibilty for her mistake. I know that is not fashionable, but it is honorable.

Of course he cares. It’s his job to take jabs at those in the spotlight. Politicians who put their children and their actions in the spotlight also become fair game. Sarah isn’t taking the heat very well and neither is her husband. They both jumped to a conclusion that the joke was about raping their 14 year old. If you watch the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch... you’ll see he never mentioned the 14 year old specifically, nor did he say anything about rape. Letterman rides the edge with his jokes, but I seriously doubt that he condones rape.
As far as Bristol owning up to her mistake, I give her credit for that. She will also be ridiculed and that’s just the way it is.

The joke, from the beginning was about the older daughter. The joke was poorly researched and missed the mark. The Palins took the opportunity to create a firestorm about something that never existed to stir up public outrage to benefit themselves, and THEY made their 14 y/o the picture child for rape. That disgusts me and has made me see Sarah Palin in a different light, and it's not flattering for her at all. Bristol being a teenage mother is just something that happened and the irony of her mother's position just makes makes that funny to some people. It's great that she is taking responsibility for her actions (I don't call children mistakes until they are old enough to disappoint their parents and the community at large), but that doesn't make the situation any less ironic. She has put herself in the public eye and being a public is now open to satire. If we could make Britney Spears jokes when she was 18, then we can make Bristol Palin jokes, the lesson learned here is to make sure to get the correct Palin in your joke before you tell it.

Anyone who watched the monolgue knew that the joke was referring to the knocked up daughter that Palin drug onstage at the convention to parade to the right wingers. Palin is the one who made the comment about it being about the younger one. No one knew who was with her at the game or even cared.
A lot of the late night jokes are off color. That's why they are told "late night" Sarah made it prime time then feigned the "victim".
That's why the majority ofsensible women of women don't support her for president.
