When I was 16 I cosigned a contract with my brother (who the hell lets a 16yo sign a contract?) to join the gym. I think I only went a handful of times before I moved to TX, and shortly thereafter my brother was sent to Bagdad. We canceled the membership and since I was 60 miles away from one, and he was considerably more miles away from one, we thought everything was in order. Three years later he got a bill for $645 that was due only 4 days from when he received it. He called me and told me to call their 800 number and see what I needed to do. So, I called and they told me they needed a bank statement as proof of address change (which I had sent 3 years prior) and $50 cancelation fee. I did that the day after since I called around midnight.
That taken care of, my brother then called to see if everything was in order and they said he still owed $48. That was a lot more acceptable than the $600. BUT THEN they called him later and said that he now owed $700.
This is a bully of an organazation that will do everything short of raping your mom to get your money and will never EVER make anything clear to you what you need to do in order to get out of their clasp. Stay away from them. If you want to work out, it'll be cheaper to just buy your own equiptment.

SUMMARY ========== ** Bally Fitness PURPOSELY incorrectly submits automated monthly credit card charges for a pool of customers to get their customers on the phone. ** They do this by submitting the credit card charge without the proper information to cause a soft decline. ** They then leave an automated message from headquarters on your phone asking you to call them back to handle a billing issue. ** Once on the phone, they then proceed to offer a 25% discount if customer pays out the remainder of the contract while trying to resolve the automated billing issue. ** Bally Total Fitness filed for bankruptcy in 2007 and they are resorting to shady marketing techniques to generate revenue in 2008.

I agree with you. I signed in Jan. 2008 for a month to month (no contract) and I signed to pay every month for $27.00. I payed in the club for the month of Feb. and Mar. and I was trying to use my debit card and apparently my account was overdrawen so I called my bank and those m***er f***ers have been charging my card! I was so pissed I wanted to cancel my account. I misplaced my contract so I requested a copy because the raised my monthly to $34.10 without notifying me and they also said I signed a 3 year contract. I will sue them if they don't give me my money back. So don't sign anything with this company it's cheap then most gyms but look what happens they steal your money. This was in SOUTH BAY.

BALLY"S TOTAL FITNESS USES TRICKS TO GET YOU IN A CONTRACT. I made the HUGEEEEE mistake of signing it. I signed one for 36 months, later they had this "Great deal" I could add anyone for the Low price of 19 dollars. I decided to add my friend who I did not think was too reliable to pay. So I specifically said MONTH TO MONTH for him. They said yes MONTH to MONTH. So know my unreliable friend is not paying his share of the bill. I said no ploblem his only on there MONTH TO MONTH. It turns out that the Fuck@rs are now telling me that his on there for 36 months too. I am so angry. I asked to speak with the Manager and he said no his on their for 36 months basters they use good trickery KEEP AWAY FROM THEM!!!!!
