It's nice to know I am not alone. Memorial Day, Lowe's, Ellsworth, Maine. Wrote check for full purchase price significantly less than funds in account. Clerk asked for Driver's License. Clerk calls Certegy and provides check number, driver's license number, store number, amount of check. Interestingly, I never hear the clerk rattle off the account number or name of the financial institution. Check is declined as "Code 2." Clerk hands me what looks like a cash register receipt all of thirteen or more inches long with instructions that I may call Certegy, toll-free and find out why the check is declined. Later that day, I call the toll-free number. Get computer generated voice. Input relevant info- amount and the check number. Computer generated voice response goes like this: Store was identified- although I had not given the store name, something about looking out for fraud, and while my check was not the subject of fraud, stolen checks, unlawful use, or anything that would reasonably lead one to decline a check, it did offer me the option of an "Gold Application." I hung up. There is no way that I am completing an application where I am being solicited by an entity is East Cupcake somewhere which will be seeking additional financial information (not sure if there is a fee for the "gold application" but I am not engaging in this behavior to find out). This does not pass the smell test and one need not be a lawyer to figure that out. I will return to Lowe's to complete my purchase and it will not be with a check. I plan on writing to the State's Attorney General who handles consumer protection, both in Maine and Florida, and CCing my bank, Lowe's corporate HQ, my state rep, US Rep, and my US Senators, perhaps Sen. Barney Frank as well (he's still the banking guy, right?). In the current economic climate, each peaved consumer needs to step up to the plate and let the financial industry and the governement know of your displeasure. Our current president has shown that grass roots/community organization can advance an agenda. The time is ripe.
Stop using checks for retail shopping. Problem solved.

This outfit stated they couldn't contact the bank being they were a third party. They also verified the check as being good, but couldn't over-ride the computer. Idiot. Why should I sue someone doing their job instead of "big brother" who isn't doing theirs?

Who can contact your bank to check your account balance? What information do you need?

Heres a good one, i had certegy decline a check at Verizon Wireless, When the had just approved a check there 5 minutes prior. The COR VZW rep was suprised. He and I made the comment, what if i needed to pay my wireless bill and wrote a check for that, and they wanted to buy a phone/accessories with a seperate check, which you'd have to do since their system wont allow a bill to be paid and items purchased at same time. Calling the 1800 number was usless, as all it said was that there was no negative info about me, and just basicaly just decided to deline it bc it matched a pattern of id theft, fraud, ect, and that sometimes legit checks get turned down bc of this. So i had to hike it a block over to the bank to cash the same check, where they all got a good laugh about what happened.

Yeah, happened to me this morning at Home Depot.$369 check. I love how all the posts from Tampa & Atlanta support Certegy and try to shame people into using credit/debit cards. IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS what method other folks use to buy goods. If you want to try and force people to live as you do, move to Russia. This is America, and we DO have the right to choose.

Yes, a company as a right to not accept checks.

However, a company that arbitrarily declines check in favor of pushing a 'Gold Memeber' package that allows THEM access to a consumer's bank account in return for a 'favorable' ratng with them is extortion; it also lacks morals and ethics as it is a FOR PROFIT company requesting information they cannot keep safe!!!

I had this happen this happen just this weekend at Wal-Mart. They use Certegy as well..When I called the 800# I was told that I could not go to any store that uses Certegy because it would be declined...they stated that my check fell between their parameters for fraud...I was so angry. When I tried to explain that I wasn't commiting fraud, they stated that it had nothing to do with me or my bank but that it was the number sequencing on the check...I am having trouble finding a website to file a complaint...

Today June 20, 2009, I was trying to purchase gas at Murphy USA, where I have been getting my gas for over a year. I have always written a check with no problems. However today my check was refused for the first time. I asked why my check was refused with over $14,000 in my checking account, and have never written a bad check. I learned that this outfit called CERTEGY had turned me down. I called CERTEGY to ask why I was turned down and all I got was the run around. No explanation except maybe you have checks that have not cleared the bank.

It is time to put certegy away! I won't do business with anyone I find using certegy...a pimply faced half wit with a terminal can access a bank account and find if has the funds in it and the check writer is authorized..that is also why we have drivers licenses with pictures on them

I hate certegy. If anyone has information on how to file a complaint that will actually do some good please email me at [email protected] I received a call from a collection company. They said their client certegy paid a check to a vendor named Showcase Auto Plaza, then the check had a stop payment on it. The collection agency said this was from 2003!(almost 6 years ago!) I remember this very well though. I thought it had been taken care of. In 2003 I had a Kia, and the Kia dealership closed, so a place called Showcase took over the warranty issues. I took my car in for some trouble it was having and the Kia warranty system was down. The kid working said I would have to write a check for the repairs $323.00 as a deposit and it wouldn't be cashed, just held until warranty department paid the bill (which Kias have like a 10 year warranty then) He said he need this done just so the register could balance out until they could get approval code from warranty to put in the register. I didn't like this idea but they couldn't give me the car back until I did this. So I wrote the check, but I was smart and called my bank right away and they told me they should put a stop payment on it, just in case. I received a letter in the mail the warranty did take care of the ammount due, except on a part for the cost of approximately $15.00- So I went to showcase and paid that. I guess, Showcase tried to then deposit my check and it was sent back due to stop payment. Certegy paid it because they are a check guarantee company. I have never heard one word from Certegy on this matter until now, when they have sent it over to a collection department. The collection agency is threatening me with criminal charges, so I tried to call Showcase and they are out of business. I tried to call Certegy, they say it is my responsibility. I called Kia they said only Showcase would have the records since I do not own the car anymore. I have called the collection company back, however they are very rude and have yelled at me and called me a liar and such. The collections had an old phone number which is now my father's cell phone that they were calling and giving him personal information about what they could do if I didn't pay this. Which I know is against the law. I have asked the collection company to mail me the details of this and the refuse to since they already mailed out two to me, but not at the proper address. Now all vendors that accept Certegy will not take me check. Can someone please help me?

Oh, and to all you people that say just to use a debit card- there is a reason I write checks. I pay to get them back at the end of the month due to we own Lawrence Cattle Co. and we have to have proof of all transactions that could deal with the ranch. People say just to keep the receipt, but with dealing with the IRS, they have even suggested checks then staple the check to the receipt and it is better on both ends. And I take the word of the IRS over Certegy. I have spoken to the Better Business Bereau regarding this and there is numerous complaints about them and they are trying the hardest to make something happen.

I cant believe that today I went to Wal-Mart to the money center and I was very nice to cashier that I said I do not wish to carry all cash of $836.30 and I would like to have pre-paid wal-mart debit card it is the way safe it is...she was smile and know I made a right decided and she asked me for ID and a SSN which I already gave her. She process the check which is from Merrill Lynch 401K retirement check which is suppose to be trust this check to cash it. CERTEGY is the one control and denied as a code 2 is said too risk to cash it. Then I tried other check which is from Gov't benefit its SSI check because I am deaf...the amount on SSI check is $564. Lady tried it again to process on SSI check, still denied and said code 2 too risk to cash it. I am feeling like and believe that it had nothing to do with checks to cash it, it had something that CERTEGY is against me on my history of credit if I have bad credit and CERTEGY is make sure I cant cash the check...only one way is have my check give up to whoever I owe in past of credit history debt. Thats how I feel like it how suppose to work to against anyone's credit history to not let them to cash the check. I called the 866 and I told rep about what happen and they said they cant cash 2 of checks due to code 2 too risk to cash it and told me I cant cash those checks at any wal-mart because it will be same denied. I told rep that I am report to BBB, report to Sheriff dept and an state attenoy and the rep said u r more welcome to reports as your rights but we are follow CERTEGY policy under 3 big credits. Thats what they said...they dont care and I think Banks is side with CERTEGY the way when people cant cash the check, only thing they think is open new account with any of banks. Thats like bail at people that you cant cash the check...you need to open new bank account.

The Gold Package just verifies your identity. It doesn't allow Certegy access to a consumer bank account. If you're not confortable with that, use a credit card and have an enjoyable shopping experience. It's much safer than giving your bank account information to a stranger working behind the counter of a retail store.

Sorry for you loss. You should carry a credit card or debit card instead of checks to prevent this from happening again. Why wouldn't the emergency hospital help you?

omg. This happened to me today at a furniture store. Boy was I embarrassed. I felt like a criminal buying furniture for my own house. I was then asked to use my debit card, I told the people NO because someone stole the number from a merchant using one of those processing machines. Then she said use your credit card. I DON'T WANT TO USE MY CREDIT CARD BECAUSE I KNOW I HAVE FUNDS IN MY ACCOUNT TO PAY FOR ALL OF THE FURNITURE. I then proceeded to call CERTYIGY. They told me because IT WAS OUT OF MY NORMAL PATTERN. I use my checks to pay my mortage and my student loans. "But you haven't paid this amount using your check." What a bunch of crock. My mortage cost more than the furniture I was buying. SO, THEY USE SOME KIND OF STRANGE ALGORITHM AND IF IT FALLS OUT OF THE NORM YOUR CHECKS ARE REJECTED. What is normal?...People shop any where and in any amount...

Per Clark Howard:
If you're paying a deposit for furniture or waiting for it to be delivered, pay only by credit card. With your credit card charge-back rights, you are protected if the furniture doesn't arrive.

There are spin-off problems in the home improvement and furniture retail industries anytime we move into a housing recession. It's important to remember that all furniture is local. There are very few true national retailers, save perhaps for Ethan Allen. Levitz is liquidating, and another big regional player -- Wickes Furniture -- is up for auction in bankruptcy. For every regional chain that fails, there will be hundreds of ma-and-pa furniture stores that don't make it.

So why does this matter to you? A lot of people pay deposits for furniture that they haven't taken delivery of yet. If you pay with cash, check or debit card, your money is gone if the retailer fails. In his TV work, Clark has done at least 10 stories standing in front of vacant furniture stores with the camera panning from empty wall to empty wall. It's always the same story: Clark interviews some poor soul who talks about how much money they lost on deposit.

There are only two ways to buy furniture. The first is by seeing it, buying it and taking it home. The other way is to pay via your credit card. Beware if you get past the 6-week mark and the furniture still has not been received. Make sure you file a dispute with your credit card company by the 55th day. A credit card is no better than cash if you go past 60 days without filing a dispute. The dispute will take months to process and really just helps you preserve your rights under the law. You can later release a dispute if your furniture arrives. Some people opt for in-store financing, which is a third gray area. You should have the same rights, in theory, as with a major credit card, but the in-store financing creditors are a hassle to deal with if a furniture store goes bust.

update here is that web site
http://www.certegycheckservices.tk/

you just gave me an ideal im going to make a web site

{Take Action}
{I too was declined even though I had the funds and no negative history. I have started emailing the retailers above and I encourage you to do the same. I have also filed a complaint with the FTC and written my congressman. I only hope someone creates a boycottcertegyretailers webpage so we can unite all the stories and retailer contact links and start a petition for change.}
