I wish I can speak to someone in higher management. I have never felt so unwelcomed in all my years of working. I work for Bed Bath and Beyond (on W.Colonial, Orlando Fl.) and I have to say that the managers that work at the one I am at are very racist and rude. I am a student, a mother and a hard worker. I have called in due to illness, and have called ahead of time to let management know that I was running late. I felt as if I were being investigated for being late, even when I told the manager what was going on. I felt as though my manager didn't believe me. I feel that with this kind of business it's no wonder no one wants to stay long at this store. Many associates have already left the store and more continue to resign from their positions due to the stress of working under terrible management. I have been working for Bed Bath and Beyond for almost two months and none of the associates I work for can say anything good about this store. Many nights I have stayed later then the time I was scheduled, but if I call in late I get investigated like I am a bad person. I wish for something to be done about this or soon there will be no one to work for this store. I am informing whomever reads this e-mail take head to it. I am making a copy of it and sending it to whoever will read it. I am an ambitious person, and if something is not done about the way "certain races" are being treated I will make sure that everyone knows. Thank you for your time sincerely, a Colored Bed Bath and Beyond Employee.

If you still truly work for BBB, why dont you call the 1800 Network number (you should know what that is) or contact your District HR manager? Those are the people who can help fix the problem instead of emailing complete strangers who can do nothing to help you.

You wrote about racism in the store, but yet you don't give us any support of how (i'm assuming) white people are being treated differently than, as you put it, Colored associates. I also used to be a manager for a retail store (not Bed Bath and Beyond) and an associate who has only been there for two months that has already called off and also called in late raises question of work ethic. The early months of an employee's time at a retail establishment shows your department or store manager what kind of employee you will be or signs of future problems. Like Saraj said, call HR and discuss this situation, its what they get paid for.

Bed Bath & Beyond cares nothing for it's non-management employees. You are simply a body to fill a slot for them. When their sales go down, there will be no consideration for you, your family, thier promises, or even that you are a human being. When I sat in the trailer where they were hiring for a new store, I was made promises about hours, benefits, and a potential future with the company. What actually happened is that during the unpacking of products, there was so much plastic-dust in the air that I got a lung infection but never called in sick because of the treatment that I witnessed of other people that wee getting sick too. They were getting docked in a point system that we were told would directly effect reviews, raises and futures with the company. I worked there 4 months and never had a review as promised at 90 days. When benefits were supposed to begin, my hours went from 40 hours to 16 per week. I was told it was based on store sales and the fact that the payroll was being affected by the inventory that was placing our staff in other stores. In other words, take hours and money frome me to fund thier inventory at other stores. My question is then, if my hours can fund other stores slaes reflect upon my having my hours kept stable? Over all, after the opening of the new store, the staff went from the original approx. 40 core people, down to about 6.
I have never seen such blatant and unapologetic exploitation of people's efforts, hopes and financial stability in all my 30 years of working.
If you are not hired as a manager, you will be NOTHING to this company. Beware, their promises are hollow and the very moment that they think they might not make a billion in sales....YOU will be gone.

As a retail manager for over 11 years, I can tell you that when you call in sick, or are late, it does not matter whether we believe your excuse or not. The direct impact of your absence, or tardiness, is on your fellow employees not on the management staff, as they have to cover the majority of your work as well as their own.
It is due to employees like you, that miss an unusual amount of work in a short time, that morale starts to go downhill because employees feel as though the store is short-staffed. Management is blamed for issues that are caused by your lack of effort to get to work as scheduled.
Attendance policies are in place in most companies that allow for a reasonable amount of missed work for legitamite reasons. The problem with most employees that find themselves with attendance issues is that they use up their "sick" days when they oversleep, just do not feel like going to work, or do not account for traffic.
If you have an illness that is causing you to miss extended periods of work, I suggest looking into FMLA.
As for the racist allegation, I did not see anything in your comment to substantiate your claim. You gave no example, nor did you mention that you lodged a complaint with the company's HR department.

It doesn't matter whether you follow your schedule or not, you still won't get a good review, a promotion, or more hours. You can call your DHR or the 1800 number, but they will turn your problem with them around to them having a problem with you. It's your entire fault no matter what proof you have. I suggest you find another job, then quit Bed Bath and Beyond...the company isn't worth working for.

Bottom line is Bed Bath & Beyond has treated me extremely well. I started in this company almost three years ago and through my HARD WORK and DEDICATION, I rose through the ranks and I am now an Assistant Store Manager. When you work hard and show your TRUE VALUE to a company, they take care of you because you are identified as an asset to the company. If you are complaining it is not because BB&B are a bunch of racists, or they see you only as a number, it is because you WORK ETHIC leaves much to be desired.

I am an African American employee of BBB and I work "HARD" and constantly show my "TRUE VALUE" for the company and I still agree with this young lady that BBB is a racist company!!!!! I recieved more compliments when I started off as a casheir cleaning bathrooms at night..Since I became a part of management I haven't received training like the white employees or pay and have seen higher management racial profile black customers and try to get me to help participate like I've sold out to my color like an UNCLE TOM just because I work beside them!!! I have gone to corporate.... And that bull about having a no retaliation policy went out the door as soon as she left!

Hmmm, I have read all of the responses to this poor girls letter. And honestly babygirl you should not be calling in late or sick if you have just been working with the company for 2 months. I understand what you may be going through with your kids and it is hard sista. Ask the Lord to give you strength and look for another job. I on the other hand I had been employed with Bed Bath & Beyond for a little over 3 years and I will never play the race card if the situation does not call for it. But the company is a racist company point blank period. I was the hardest working Receiver in my District as told to me by everyone in Upper Management and the most knowledgeable. But when my yearly review came and my raise kicked in it was only for a dime. I have been blatantly overlooked for promotions that I was well gualified for just by being a young, black male. Theres no way to sugar coat it, is what it is. All the money I made and saved for the company was never taken into consideration. I was written up for Insubordination and when I challenged my Assistant Store Manager to give the definition of insubordination I was fired. Damn near four years with this company and no thank you for a job well done. I will not go down quietly, my voice will be heard. Its time to put an end to this my Brothas, and Sistas the time to come forward is now. Im not in it for the money, hard working people should be respected and honored. I have been hearing these stories for too long and Im tired. Its time to put some action behind these words.

I know people used to work for these slugs and I can tell you first hand that they don't give a rats ass about you or your race. They are not prejudice....they treat everyone like scum They care about the money. All the promises made by higher ups are bullshit! If one person has it in for you watch out, they will get you fired. I know of plenty of stories but will not tell them here and neither should you. If they find out you are bashing them they will bring you up on charges. Did you read the fine print on the documents you signed in that trailer?????????

I used to be an operations manager adn aasistant store manager. I had a racist store manager named Marc Harrell, who would never hire any other race than white that I sent for second interveiw, he never outright told me he wouldnt hire another race but he did outright tell me they better be hot chicks or dont even bother with a second interveiw.
Yes, through hard work you can move up, but if your not part of the ole'boys club you will be forced out. After confronting this store manager about him possible saying sexually explict comments to an associate, he laughed and said I would get mine, shortly after I was investigated by loss prevention, and fired by my district manager for "poor judgment", because they found I made a payroll error, which coincidentally who do you think trained me on the antiquanted payroll system ? Come to find out this guys sister was a regional manager, and his brother in law led store set-up. I always wondered how this yahoo got his position over the much more qualified assistants who continually got passed over for positions. My advice is to get out while you can, they'll trap you with a decent salary in a mid level position and promote their buddies, all day walking all over you!

yes, there is definitly air quality issue with the amount of poly-fiber in the air. I wouldnt doubt there has been many sicknesses and lung disease that have not been connected to this.

I worked for BB&B during its early yrs. and during the time they went public. This company is not a racist company. I admit that they have the worst people manangement practices you will find in any retail...but racist they are not. EVRYONE is expandable, they breed paronia amongst the rank and file to keep abreast of what is going on, and promote the employees that keep them informed as to the "gossip" or discord amongst the rank and file. Back in the day in order to get promoted you had to do the Monday night drink fest with the Regional Manager Bill O. and his sidekick Tim P. After a few to many beers the confusions (gossip) would fly. As well as some "personal favors". Anyone who was not there to defend or betray never made it very far. The practices of this company, and the lack of accountability Warren and Lenny held for thier Store Managers and Regionals was sickening. I worked with people that were incredible who were let go for no reason other then to "set an example". The turning point for me came when they made me dismiss this young man named Mike because he could not afford to buy himself nice sneakers. This hard working young man, was working to help support his family. It has been over 15 yrs and it still to this day bothers me. BB&B is absolutely the worst place in America to work. For the record Mike was blonde and blue eyed.

Listen I will be honest. Lots of people play the race card, so do it for an excuse and others because it applies for there day by day. See I'm a receiving manager in one of there stores (BB&B). The DM, store manager and ops manager expect that a person that has broke there back, that evertime you see a person working that the person is sweating and hasn't toke a break, tired and threat them about there job just to process the freight faster. I have came late 1 time ( and called) "anyone in my store even floor managers know that" but they take it like a don't work good, like if I was late everyday. My productivity numbers are always below 2.5 which is good. my work is always improving. Now theres a white girl that just started 3 weeks ago, she been late about 10-15 time without a call and gets paid more than me. She didn't come to work a couple of days (one of the managers I'm cool with told me and he was piss). Would you say that isn't a race card. When I asked the store manager about that person he/she said I don't mind, it's cool. So that one day that I came late gives them a right to break hell on me and the white girl has done it several times and IT'S COOL. I ain't complaining as long as my check comes on friday I don't care. All jobs are stressfull, but BB&B just takes the cake. Herrassment and Discremenative comments don't make work moral better. Shoot, thats why I'm Leaving this place and to all who say that BB&B is a great place are mostly brown nose or people that kissed a good rump to get to that place or floor manager. My experience here was OK untill that one day I came late. Can't wait to leave. Have strength, Mama. Judgement come close to the those who hate.

Even though this is like beating a dead horse, I cannot help myself but to chime in on this topic. I am approaching my 15 year anniversary with BBB. I am an operations manager, and have seen many hourly associates, and managers, come and go. The truth is that BBB is not for everyone. It is a lot of manual work and the standards are very high. As far as attendance goes, many associates go an entire year with no tardies or call-offs, and are rewarded by the company. If you were my employee and had call offs and tardies already in two months, I would be irritated with you as well. Your schedule is written in advance so you can plan your life. When you call off, don't be suprised when your hours are cut and given to someone who doesnt call in late or sick. We are running a business, not a charity. Also, if you are still employed by BBB, call the 800 Network number or your District HR manager with your issues. They are the only ones who can fix them. It is usually people like you who complain to the whole world except the people who can help you that make everyone look bad. Grow up and act like the mature adult you claim to be!!!
A happy BBB employee
