Spacemaker Toaster Ovens

Don't bother, We recently replaced our old B&D under-cabinet toaster oven with the new Spacemaker. I'm now fighting with Applica (B&D sold their name years ago). The unit has 3 functions - Warm, Bake, and Toast. There is no difference between to the Bake and Toast settings, the two elements, one above and one below, both come on then cycle on and off depending on the temp setting. This means it takes for ever to toast a slice of bread, and the finished toast is so dry it shatters rather than cuts. Applica support initially agreed that it's supposed to stay on and not cycle when set to Toast, and sent a replacement unit. When that unit performed exactly the same way as the original, Support changed their minds and now say it's supposed to cycle on and off, also they said "it's not really intended as a toaster, more for baking". I am now trying to get them to admit that the two units I've got now are defective.

Mary, that "new" Spacemaker toaster oven is the same one that I am fighting Applica over (and losing). Applica bought the B&D name years ago, and have been making inferior products under that name ever since. You cannot get a usable slice of toast from this machine - it takes so long it comes out too dry - and the heating is very uneven due to the fact there is only one element above and one element below the shelf. The shelf height is not adjustable. The under-the-cabinet design is a great feature, but the performance is very poor.
