The magazine in question is Good Housekeeping, and their count is flawed. The 1000-count sheets are woven of plied yarns, meaning that 1000 threads are twisted into 500 yarns before weaving.

Essentially, this would make the sheet appear, under a microscope, to have a 400-500 thread count, when actually there are 1000 threads per square inch. Of course, learning that would be too difficult for a magazine attempting to make its living by tarnishing other companies' reputations.

The benefit of a two-ply weave is that the sheets will last longer and wrinkle less, which can really become a concern in higher-thread-count sheets.

The differential in price between the Hotel 600 and 1000 count sheets is due to both the near-double thread count and the amount the vendor charges BBB for the product. Of course, if the vendor charges BBB less, they can charge the consumer less.

Please note that these are the comments of someone educated on bedding products and in sheet composition in general (and someone who shops at Bed Bath and Beyond A LOT). They are NOT the opinions, ideas and expressions of Bed Bath and Beyond itself.

The above answer is completely false. In 2006 a class action law suit was filed against bedding companies including Bed Bath and Beyond for falsifying the thread count. Indeed, sheets that are a thread count of 1000 and 2-ply are far inferior to a true 1000-count single ply sheet. 2-ply sheets are weaker and tend to pill more, but are cheaper to make, hence they cost around $100 rather than $500. The 1-ply yarn is a single long strong yarn, whereas with multiple-ply, more than one shorter yarns are weaved together, making an inferior yarn. Thus Good Housekeeping got it right. I have a bunch of gift certificates to Bed Bath and Beyond, and I am a little bummed out because their product labels are missing some essential information, such as ply count.
