Dayton, Ohio-area food pantries busy due to strike layoffs
United Way officials in Dayton, Ohio, say record numbers of families are seeking emergency food assistance because of layoffs caused by the strike at Detroit-based American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc.
Dayton-area labor officials estimate the work stoppage has caused the layoffs of more than 3,300 employees at the Moraine General Motors truck plant, Johnson Controls in West Carrollton, Plastech Industries and DMAX Ltd.
Food pantry officials say more than 900 individuals have sought help this year, about three times as many as by this time a year ago. Plans are being made to open two additional sites in union halls. Read more

2 No, people directly affected by the strike that do not work for GM do not get UI. Poor guys at american axle, give me a break. They are sipping from their own medecine. They should not be getting anything as far as i am concerned. If they want paid, go back to work and earn it like the rest of us! |

yes, some are getting UI but it isn't what a paycheck would have been. I am not completely pro-union, but they are asking the people in Detroit for a 50% paycut. Most people could never do that. when you have bills to pay, you pay them and what is left goes to food if it needs to. Food pantries hurt no one. I have been hungry and needed help. I have helped others when I could. What goes around comes around. there are no pantries for electric, gas, and other bills.

1 Does this reporter actually get paid? I don't see ANY of the necessary questions being asked or answered here. Why is the strike going on in the first place? How is the company doing REALLY aside for CEO benefits? What constraints are on the company? Why don't they talk to their employees and keep them informed? Why do you NEED a frickin Union and what does the union say? For some of us who actually buy cars from you people; those are questions WE too should know. Just an idea. I don't know about you folks, but if churches in the area really want to help; they can donate some of their funds to these people to help them pay their utility bills until the strike is over. The food pantry is fine; but a little help on the bills would help too. If I were working for a church there, I would also like to see proof that whoever came there for assistance that they WERE working for these companies. You wouldn't want it to go to some dope addict, just poppin out the kids. And our workers shouldn't be ashamed. |

Oh, and folks, I would write your congressperson and put a STOP to this mandatory 'giving to charity' that the companies have to do. And they have to do it "multiculturally". The problem IS that these organizations that the companies have to support are POLITICAL in nature; not "charitable". Some of them are downright treasonous and actually CAUSE some of the hardship business in this country has.
