AVX Corp. doesn't deserve media attacks

Full story: Myrtle Beach Online

Your current reporting in regard to chemical contamination involving AVX Corp. is clearly biased and not particularly informed.

Well, bless my soul, intelligent discourse from Myrtle Beach. You must be new to the area. From Texas maybe? Thank you for an informed piece and for recognizing the newspaper's true goal, to influence public policy rather than report the news. Perhaps there are a few level headed residents that will read your words and realize how badly they have been duped.
Thank you.

thank you for putting a positive note on something that has been clearly spun in a way so as to shame a company into not expanding here locally. We have lost jobs due to this media coverage, we will be losing jobs due to our city council's Bullheadedness and unwillingness to work with not only special interest within the county but other governments within this county, and the county itself.

It's time the council went back to working toward job growth in this slow economy, and well past time for the city council to begin working with the councils of other governments, and to stop thinking of itself as the best thing that ever happened to Horry county.

TCE was not always a "hazard".

Few folks realize that tricholorethylene has been declared a hazard after the fact. Prior to the 1980s, it was used extensively "like water", even at the consumer level. Its use was permitted for decades.

AVX used it, as did many other industries.

AVX may have misbehaved later, but they should not be blamed for their usage of TCE that occurred before TCE was declared a hazard.

Finally, someone has spoken out on the behalf of AVX.
I think it is time others consider the postive impact AVX has had on Horry County and begin to speak out!
Home owners around AVX should have put more thought into their decision before purchasing a home beside a manufactoring facility & abondoned Air Base.
Stop blame shifting and take responsibility for your decisions and find an "educated" way to work with AVX.
Consider what is sprayed on your produce, injected into your meats and mixed in with your grains and then sold in our grocery stores.Should we close them all down? Food for thought!

Good letter and comments - nice to hear voices of reason for a change.

Did the developer of the homes around AVX ever take soil etc samples before putting up houses? Seems to me the homeowners would have a good claim against the developers if they didn't do their research before building, selling and making a quick buck.

Elizabeth Skidmore is a genius !! Not only did she get her facts right but she presented them in a fashion that would delight the Dean of English at any university in the world.

There's only one way this editorial made it into the newspaper........the proof reader was ASLEEP and no one in Sun News management approved the
Op-Ed page prior to printing.

Thanks !! Like I've said before, I've worked at AVX for almost 35 years and am yet to grow horns or a pointed tail.

Ms. Skidmore.....dinner at Ruth's Chris on me ???

I agree with you! Let's not run them out of town or we will feel the pain!

Can we get the Sun News to publish their use of solvents over the years? How much is in each newspaper going to each house each morning?

I am so glad The Sun News ran my letter and I appreciate all of the great comments that my letter generated.
There was one thing that I wrote however that was omitted when the paper printed my letter. And what was omitted was the fact that Succesful recreational beach communities such as Daytona,Jacksonville,Tampa and Charleston all have one thing in common that being a strong industrial base that co-exists with the beach community. An important point I do believe.
And one we still need to instill into our elected officials minds.
Thanks again everyone! And do not hesitate to reach these elected officials with your concerns and thoughts on this matter as it is so crucial to this areas future.

AVX is in to many lawsuits to respond, and the Sun News would mis-quote them anyway. Thanks Elizabeth for putting the uproar on the media. I have seen in past articles no less than 10 request for the Sun News to come clean on the solvents they have used over the past 10 years. So come on Sun News fess up.

Perhaps Mr. Wren of the Sun News could do an article on his own company. The MB City Council is very short sighted. First with the rally situation, then with AVX, what next I wonder?? Watch out local hotels and restaurants, you're next. They will want to run you out of town also. The old saying still goes, "don't bite the hand that feeds you."
Their time and that of Myrtle Beach will come, they can thrive on minimum wage jobs and those who earn minimum wage BECAUSE THAT IS ALL THAT WILL BE LEFT. It will serve them right!!

THANK YOU ELIZABETH, WELL WRITTEN.

Now 2,000 people are back on the streets unemployed because of the Hard Rock Park closing, lets see how the Counsil feels about taking food from 1,000 family mouths wanting to close AVX too.

Could not agree more what is the matter with people or the City council wanting to run jobs out of town and industry out of town what the heck are they thinking.
people can not survive on minimum wage jobs and AVX offered much more that that.
God please let them see the errors of their ways please please please
