This would be a lot more impressive if the average person could actually afford to ride the Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains. Last time I looked, it was $20 each way to the East Bay. That's about double what subsidized local rail costs on the east coast.
You should also keep that in mind when they tell you that the whiz bang high speed rail to LA is only going to cost $50 each way. It'll be a miracle if it's under $150 each way.

Kimoi, I agree with you if you are buying a one way ride or round trip ticket. However, if you are commuting from Fairfield to Richmond daily, the monthly train pass is $218.00 which pales in comparison to the gas, traffic, toll and time it takes to commute by car.

With respect kimoi, you are dead wrong that it's cheaper here on the east coast.
Looking at Train rider's example, Fairfield to Richmond is a 37 mile trip. Looking at a few trips in similar lengths here on the East Coast, one finds that New Brunswick, NJ to Newark, NJ is 38 miles. An Amtrak ticket for that run would cost you between $18 for a one way ticket brought way in advance to a high of $47 for a last minute ticket. A 10 ride ticket would cost $280 and a monthly ticket would cost $630.
Compare that to Train rider's $218 for a monthly ticket,$80 for a 10 ride ticket, and $13 for a one way ticket.
One could also opt to take New Jersey Transit's commuter service, but that runs slower, makes more stops, and it has far less comfortable seating than Amtrak. On NJT that same ride would cost $7.25 one way,$72.50 for a 10 trip, or $198 for a monthly ticket.
