Its just another way of adding to the bottom line, their fares are cheaper than most carriers but they dollar you to death on everything else.
The one I really like is a convience fee of 15.00 when you purchase a ticket on line. At one time they said you could avoid that fee by purchasing your ticket at the counter. Thats not so now.
If you purchase online then it seems to me that would hold down labor costs and labor costs are one of the airlines biggest costs bisides fuel.

For U.S. travel my carry on bag fits under the seat.
For world travel it's the legal size carry on.
When flying to many places in the U.S. and Italy I carry no bag at all.
People carry too much.
