Personally, I would like to see 29 redesigned in it's current location using a system of on and off ramps, and eliminating the traffic lights.

It is amazing this stupid community resists everything. If the rest of Virginia was like us there would be no roads at all.

If there are real measurable benefits than do it. Change for the sake of change is why northern Virginia's highway network will be forever behind the current day problems. This thing has been studied to death, it seems, and each study comes up with different cost/benefits conclusions.

But cheer up. Like most things around here it may simply come down to whatever UVA wants.

Boyd lives north of town. Route it in front of his house.

And how do you propose all the business on 29 have access? Not to mention that would be much more expensive, time consuming and a bigger traffic mess during construction than building a whole new road.

I am not a civil engineer or an expert on construction, but I think when something is poorly designed it makes more sense to fix the problem than to build around it. The question you are asking was undoubtedly asked by many people when main street was turned into a pedestrian mall. The more businesses that have direct access to 29, the slower traffic will move. Other cities I have lived in built access roads which parallel the main road providing access for local traffic. Using under/overpasses with merging ramps for intersecting roads would eliminate the traffic lights. I don't think it would be any more expensive or time consuming than the vdot plan. Construction would slow traffic down for sure but could be minimized by re-building one intersection at a time and working at night. If you have numbers or data on the potential expenses please post them.

Here's a radical idea: Let's design a bypass.......you know something that bypasses congestion.......for instance, a road that runs from north of Ruckersville to I-64.......Instead of from Forrest Lakes to UVA.......

Instead we're blowing a half billion dollars just so Kenny Boyd curries enough favor with the Republican powers that be to end up in Richmond. They just redistricted his house from Creigh Deed's district to Rob Bell's district. You think that's by accident? Nooooooooope. It's his reward for WASTING a half billion dollars on a bypass to NOWHERE--a cupcake of a ticket to Richmond.

I think there are just too many existing stand-alone buidings right on 29 which would require their own 'ramps', post office, a lot of office buildings, hotels, etc which don't really have other decent back street access.

The proposed bypass interchanges have had to of been designed by someone on acid. While I'm all for a bypass it needs to be a bypass, not a convenient road for UVA employees and students. The southern terminus is a joke.
