Gee, the Albemarle county school board didn't see this coming? What part of "lean times" don't they get?

Stop cutting teachers. Redistrict so that duplication services stops. 2000 students at AHS, 900 or less at MHS and WAHS, services are beign duplicated in smaller classrooms e.g. if MHS has only 16 students in AP classes this is not meeting capactiy, when AHS can teach 32 in an AP class. Look at closing down special programs where per student costs are out of control! One example is Murray High school. With semesterized classes available at all high schools this is no longer an argument that holds water. Murry's program should be place within one of the regular high schools that has available capacity, like MHS. The duplication of services including: core class instructors, building costs, transportation costs, office staff, is available at the all other high school at a much reduced cost. The current special support programs are provided by AHS staff. Stop paying for so many special programs and start keeping students who attend the school, and teachers who teach in these schools a break. Additionally, Why??? is our county schools support so many students being transported as far as Richmond for special services. Use what we have in our community, if its not good enough let the parents of these students move to find a better free education system.

The county cannot make people move but are required by LAW to provide the services in the special ed Instructional Education Plan (IEP). If you have only a few that need some specialized services, it is actually cheaper to transport children out of the community.

Every year the call goes out for more money. But yet the results for student achievement get worse. I am sick of this argument. Students in India attend classes in schools with dirt floors and 30 students per class and they are outperforming the United States!

" If cuts have to be made, they will be to teaching positions." Is that a threat? Now it appears that the educational profession has decided to hold the childrens education hostage if they don't get all the money they demand. You have to work within the budget that you are given by your benefactor (uh, that's the taxpayer). A responsible school board should be preparing a new budget, not issuing threats. If that requires everyone to take a paycut, then everyone takes a pay cut. If you decide to fire people, then that process should start at the top, not the bottom. A friend once told me that "education funding is a black hole". He was more prophetic than I gave him credit for.

The cuts should be in entitlements, 40% of current and future retirees of all public sector employees.

The "threats" began last year. The school board took the stance that the BOS must raise taxes and refused to look seriously at cuts and changing their mindset. Went round & round with a school board member on this.

C-Ville Patriot, you're dead wrong on both accounts. Student achievement has not worsened, the standards by which we measure it have worsened. Politicians, rather than trained professionals, now make the determination as to when and how students should be assessed. They lack the expertise to create reliable and valid assessments.

As far as India outperforming the US academically on average, that assertion is laughable. EVERY child in the US receives a guaranteed public education. Many children in India do not eat, much less receive education.

Unlike many Americans, Indians are not so bigoted that they mind learning a foreign language. The sheer number of them that are now fluent in the English and their willingness to actually work have enabled them to catch up with the United States economically. Just look at the number of Americans that would prefer to collect unemployment when illegal aliens can manage to find lower paying jobs.

I know about IEP I have 2 kids in the system, and get support from the schools and do my part as a parent to get support from outside programs that I pay for. I guess you are just looking for a handout.

Wow you are judgemental, I was giving you information. I don't have any kids with IEPs.
