Great article on protecting CD's by using banks that participate with CDAR's. However, there may be more to managing a portfolio and 'sleeping well' than simply diversifying. Diversification, as this author suggests, is a useful approach when dealing with mutual fund portfolios and I do exactly that with my retirement plans that consist of different fund investments. It is not effective trying to time these investments that consist of baskets of stocks.
However, if one has a portfolio of individual equities, as I follow with my blog as an amateur investor, it is useful to limit losses to preset tolerance levels and to sell these declining stocks completely and also to balance this approach with selling gaining stocks slowly and partially. Within this portfolio, it may well be wise to try to diversify one's holdings into different industries and vary by capitalization.

CDARS is actually offering protection up to $50 million these days. $1 million was back when it first started, it has been rising steadily ever since.
