Backed out of the garage and found a small black piece of plastic laying on the garage floor where my Chevy Malibu resides. It's a "semi-circle about 2" across; 3/4" tall. It also has two tabs(one on the base of the round side; one on the base of the flat side). On the inside center of the part is the number 8. There is also a stamped A.M.A. in one section,a number which I presume is a part number 031D0380 in another section; finally the letters REV. in another section . It appears to be rather dusty with carbon residue inside. so I can only assume it is from the underside of the Chevy.

It's a sprocket cover that goes on the very top of the garage door opener. It snaps on over the the sprocket that the chain wraps around, so once that cover is in place the chain goes in one of the openings of the cover and comes out the other opening.

The exact same thing happened to me, a couple of weeks ago. I have a Toyota Tundra (07) Pick-Up, with a Hard Bed Cover. Parked my truck in the Garage one evening, as I walked out of vehicle, this Same cap was simply sitting on my Bed Cover?
I held on to it, wondering what in the WORLD? I remember going out to dinner with my 20 Year Old Son, and upon my return that evening, is when I noticed this same Plastic Cap sitting on my Truck. At First I honestly thought that someone was playing games, and put it on my bed cover during dinner, and I drove all the way home with this cap?
But with Your Help, sure as Anything, this is a Cover for the Chain Sprocket, on my Craftsman Garage Door Opener, which Fell Off. I would have NEVER GUESSED! It's Back on The UNIT NOW! THANK YOU!

Wonderful, I just had this same experience and googled the part number and found this accurate and helpful answer. The part was broken, probably happened with the slack tension on the chain.

Dear Internet (and topix forum). This exact same thing happened to me. Found this part in the driveway and assumed it fell off my 1999 vw that I had been working on (and panicked a bit - did I forget to put a part back in?). So glad to find out its from the garage door opener. Thank you!!!!!!!!!! Yay internet!

THANKS! thought the car was falling apart...you were exactly right, everything you said was correct and the cap went where you said (gonna fall off again, but at least I know where it came from)

If you are having parts fall off your car, you should be a little worried because that is not a normal occurrence. The parts should all be snug and almost impossible to come off from wear. I would go talk to someone that knows more about auto parts so you can figure out what the part is, then also see if you are missing any other parts. There is a chance that you engine is missing other things if one part already came off. http://www.pinedaleautowreckers.ca

Thank you for the answer. I found this part on the garage floor under our 2007 Honda Accord. The Honda service department said it didn't go on the car.

Man! Isn't the internet something, Just type in a little information and you get a flood of answers. I too found this cap on my garage floor. Looked all over my GMC pickup and could not find a missing part. Found the number 03ID0380 on the inside of the cap and typed in and here we are with the correct answer. Wow! that is something. Have a great day everyone!

Holy crap Batman, I read the first few comment and I thought that I had written these comments. I was working on my 68 Chevy Malibu. I found this part, half of circle, with two tabs at the top and bottom. Seeing I just got done working on the car and backed the car into the garage and found this piece on top of the hood of the car. Knowing the part number inside of the part, I typed that part number and instantly realized that I had a garage opener chain cover in my hand. Thank you so much, I would have taken the Malibu apart looking for where it came.

Yesterday the garage door brace fell on my new Malibu.. yes the two bolts came off the opener. Found nuts months ago. Blamed it on the car but, twas the opener. I ran over that black cover while backing out. Wondered what it was. Serial # same. Solved the mystery..5 years later. The new car got only a buffable scratch from the wire.

Wow. Pulled my new 2017 Ford F 150 out of garage and found this part on floor. Been crawling around all underneath truck looking for what it came off of. Googled part no. and this site popped up. If not, would still be searching for where part goes. This is great.

Guys, Internet is amazing, I found this part in the garage floor, and I started to get worried as the car that I am driving this week is not mine!
Glad I did not try to do anything with the car.
Thanks for the answer!

Years after this original post, I saw this cover shoot across my garage floor when I was backing out. Certain it came from my brand new Subaru Outback, I've been correct. Love these blogs.
