Southwest, the carpet-bagging, Walmart of airlines strikes again. With this, and the NWA/Delta and United/Continental mergers don't look for airfares to go down any time soon. In five years when there will probably be about 4 carriers left, we'll all be lamenting about the "good old days. The days when there was competition, reasonable fares, and access to smaller cities.

I am so sorry for you AirTran folks.

From those of as at TranStar, Morris, ATA.....

Souhtwest does not merge, they acquire assets.

Employees are not considered assets. Unfortunately, AirTran has many that are decidedly ghetto... so for those quality personnel at smaller airlines, dust off your resumes, for there should be many open positions at Southwest as they replace the AirTran staff.

They should have to give back the EWR slots to UA/CO now.

WN may have too.

Does American now get JetBlue is what I was wondering. What ranking in size is now WN. Bigger than US Airways Group?

I can see AA doing something with Alaska before anyone else. Similar fleet and AA's almost blank route map in the Northwest.

USAir and JetBlue might be interesting...similar fleet etc. Could really throw a wrench in the industry!

Delta is getting double-teamed now and it's going to hurt.

Before it's all said and done there will be only two airlines: 1 legacy carrier and 1 low-cost carrier. And good luck keeping Southwest's interest in HSV. AirTran will be gone from this town before the end of next year.

Hawww, like I said, WN will purchase Air Tran some day and now its here. The last year buyout of F9 was a bad choice and F9 does not operate the same aircraft and DEN still have plenty of open spaces to add to concourse C.
I am surprise that they did not purchase them sooner and bought the stock waitin for last year's anticipation. Air Tran bring in the same fleet with LIVETv on B737-700; ATL, MKE and BWI hub; and caribbean and strengthen the Northeast profitable routes against DAL.
Delta is now in big trouble and have to compete with people admiration of WN and business culture.
ATL to Northeast and Florida is going to be the biggest problem for DAL.
WN have B737NG on order and don't be surprise for 60 or so B737-800 with WN colour.
They are saying no cuts... but reasonably, lets face it. Anywhere the go head to head or offer connecting alternatives....

THERE WILL BE CUTS. Increasing yields over market share are always one of the main goals of a merger in a mature industry.

I am an investor and have been with FL since last year anticipating on this special event. Today, I see my stock almost double andsell soon.

I expect there will be job title cuts but with WN culture which rely on internal employee motivation, I see that people will be moving up the ladder. They hire externally for low pay jobs like ramp or gate agent.

I wuld expect another merger pretty soon. AA have been sitting on the sideline. All airline except AA filed for bankruptcy and have straigthen their balance sheet. Since AA have a high cost and very unionized airline, it will be hard for them to acquire US. In the long run, I expect them to acquire US or even US and B6.

Gawd. Let me introduce you to a friend mine. It is called a 'period'. It looks like this:.

Maybe next time we can talk about his cousin, the 'comma'.

UA have experience WN with hubs in LAX, DEN and MDW/ORD, now DAL will experienced it at their home turf. DAL have cut back flights to RJs at SLC.

The combined organization would have nearly 43,000 Employees and serve more than 100 million customers annually from more than 100 different airports. The combined carriers' all-Boeing fleet consisting of 685 active aircraft would include 401 Boeing 737-700s, 173 Boeing 737-300s, 25 Boeing 737-500s, and 86 Boeing 717s, with an average age of approximately 10 years, one of the youngest fleets in the industry.

Southwest Airlines also announced, previously, that it is evaluating the opportunity to introduce the Boeing 737-800 into its domestic network and maybe fly to Hawaii as did ATA from OAK to HNL with B737-800s.

So I need a period and comma. Well I'm sorry my english, spelling ,and whatever doesn't suit you.It still a fact mergers are not the answer. Southwest has only been able to survive because of government rules the major airlines have to follow. They have to fly to markets that are not all profitable. The small cities can not support the flights in and out. May-be now Southwest will have to follow these rules also. Instead of picking only the large area's.Have very few retiree's to look after.the only good things about Southwest is their ceo.He does have the right idea a happy employee is very productive. All I'm sayiing is air trans is a mistake on Southwest's part.Air Florida is lead by a northwest exec their employee's will not be happy with merger again good luck.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but everytime there is a "merger," (takeover) of one airline over another, plan on paying alot to fly. Question: If Southwest's fares are soooo cheap why don't they list them on Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity etc.. They won't because they're afraid to compete. Southwest, and Jet Blue are afraid because then people would be able to compare fares apples to apples as opposed to apples to oranges. Even with a three tier structure SW fares ARE STILL HIGHER for their cheapest as opposed to their competition in many cases, and that's flying "cattle car" with very little seat selection opportunities. SW and JB survive because of a reputation for cheap fares that if people cared, and or did a little research they'd find that often times that isn't the case. Do your homework. These airlines might be for you if you want to pay as much, if not more for a middle seat in row 26, stuck between 2 guys that go 350 bills apiece, for 3 hours.

Which means Airtrans's B717 will be going away. How about Airtran's personel? Perhaps, probably SWA only wants the routes and the landing slots.
Yes, Southwest in obviously in a quandry as the 737 replacement is not going to be ready for a number of years, and the Embraer 737 replacement is encroaching upon well known niche routes.

I would not be suprised to hear of a Southwest order for Embraer 190's in the next couple of weeks followed by an annoucement of a continually shrinking AirTran fleet of aircraft.
