It doesn't do any good to offer wi-fi on coach, as the seats are so close together that one cannot effectively open one's laptop without danger of the person in front reclining, therefore crushing the monitor.

I agree. Maybe good for crackberries and mini tabs but I can't imagine opening my laptop in coach. I suppose they are trying to make up for the fact that they are always late.

Lots of money available for airplane retrofits like this one, but no money for safety retrofits.

Older planes (pre-1992) don't have the new "16G" seats that are required for all new planes. The older seats break loose in a crash, rendering the seat belt ineffective.

OK the reporter is useless so I will ask, what is the speed? If it like the old dialup then it is useless.

And are they going to be blocking porn sites? Because then I dont want it

So what happened to All Phones must be turned off for the duration of the flight ? I guess signals from WIFI do not interfere with the planes navigational systems.

As the story points out, AirTran will be offering broadband wireless service, which is high data rate internet access, not dialup. Also, AirTran said sites with adult content will be filtered.

Flight attendant to passenger: "Sir, you have to stow your laptop. We're about to land."

Passenger to flight attendant: "But I haven't finished this download yet."

Ahh the benefits of a Tablet PC... rotate the screen around and use the stylus and you can recline all you want as it doesn't bother me... more cost effective than 1st class too!!!:P

I've used it on several flights and its been wonderful.. even got jealous looks from some cute tourists on vacation the last time. yummy

The article states 'Broadband'(which is amazing for the Sentinel), and is anything above 768 kb a second versus a max. of 56 kb for dial-up. To have dial-up on a jet would require a telephone line to it.

The airline will still always be ValuJet with a new name to me, no matter what they do.

I always keep my phone on, even when they tell us to turn it off. I text throughout the flight. We haven't crashed yet.

I have a netbook which works fine for this. And the battery life is 8.5 hours with wifi on and weighs about 3.2 pounds.
I am surprised people still travel with laptops.
