Such a conviction should automatically lead to expulsion from any legislative office, local, state or federal.
Substance abuse is not a partisan issue.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Its a misdemeanor offense, one most often related directly to and driven by the offender's disease, which can be overcome with treatment.

There are multitudes of folks leading productive lives after years of previously struggling with addiction.

I agree this is a firing offense, but see ZERO in political party ramifications unless ignored by them.

Certain standards are expected by the public of elected officials, and cocaine possession while on duty is not one of them.

Um, federal employees and contractors don't need to be "on duty" -- all they need to do is provide a dirty piss, upon demand, unscheduled, unexpected. For any reason...

And elected officials shouldn't be held to same standards?

As with Sarah Palin, you mistake popularity for intelligence.

So what? Especially elected officials should be pizz tested and background checked.... why would I want a crack head cruising for drugs in any office? If a fed employee has to undergo the background check and drug testing to determine reliability and integrity, why not an elected official? Why would any one want a pothead, cokehead, or drunk in office? They aren't known for their decision making skills.
