The last thing Obetz needs is an ice skating rink. Who is going to use it? This is not Dublin or Powell.
We need a grocery store, bank, pharmacy, things the residents can actually use. There is nothing in Obetz but a couple of bars, a beer store and fast food. Groveport has numerous banks, a grocery store, a couple of law firms, a post office.
The mayor said a couple years ago they were going to build a grocery store on Alum Creek but that never materialized. Instead we got a fitness center that nobody uses. Oh and they are now redoing the Groveport road Alum Creek interchange so we will have even more traffic on Alum Creek.

"Who" is going to build a grocery store? It would seem that no major food retailer is interested, otherwise they'd be there.
You answered your own question...retail development in Obetz would cannibalize that which is already in Groveport and both would end up failing.
You're stuck in the middle between South High and Groveport. No conspiracy there...just the way retail works.

I've only been to Obetz twice and it was in the same day due to directionally dyslexic taking the wrong turn x 2. My impression, a skating rink and a bike path ain't gonna help...

True. The South Side was unfortunately designated as the industrial/utility zone a century ago.

Also of note, that was 15 years ago. I admittedly have no clue what the area looks like now. I imagine more dilapidated, no disrespect to anyone that lives there, just reiterating my first impression from long ago and surmising from the initial post, that 2+2=4.

Obetz needs to put that money to better use by cleaning up the neighborhoods since the residents are low income and can't afford it themselves.

My point exactly, Obetz is low income, who the hell is going to use a skating rink? There is already a fitness facility here no one uses. I do agree the money would be much better spent cleaning up the neighborhood, like the one I live in which for the most part is a dump. But the mayor here seems to think this is Dublin.

I guess the city won't know "who the hell is going to use a skating rink?" until it's built. Clean up your own neighborhood, it's likely your and your neighbors mess.

Alum Creek Drive is being widened from Williams to Refugee Road, making the whole area more accessible to businesses that want to locate here. One of the problems businesses have had in locating here instead of Hamilton Road, Gender Road, South High, or Stringtown is access. Another is that if they get too close to another outlet, they cannibalize each other. This limits potential stores, as Aldis, WalMart, Krogers, Giant-Eagle, and Maiers are already within 10-15 minutes of Obetz. A Subway or Donatos doesn't need as big a population nearby to stand on its own.
Notice that one steakhouse has failed on South High and another at Georgesville Road. Picking sustainable winners is tough in the food business, and even the big companies occasionally fail. Right now everybody seems to be trying to refurbish their current locations rather than expand to unknown territory. Even the post office is consolidating away from small facilities.
Every good idea requires steady customers, and Obetz has yet to prove it can provide enough to bring the nae brand players to town.

Change the local color and the picture will improve.

Reynoldsburg is not any better, at least I don`t live in an urban ghetto which is what Reynoldsburg, and the neighborhoods around you have turned into.

A pissing contest over which sucks more? Reynoldsburg or Obetz. I don't have to drive to Groveport to go to the grocery store. You do, or did, have that I-270 shooter. That's a real feather in your cap. And the guy who shot his own car and told his dad and the police it was the I-270 shooter. Another bright Obetz bulb.

Obetz is like any of the other Columbus metro hillbilly havens, except for the grocery store issue.

Well I for one would use it as often as possible. I think its a great idea. I don't want tax dollars spent cleaning other people's messes. Clean your own neighborhood.
