I'd disagree with the premise that the waitress was trash talking and that she should have been fired. At issue here are two things: 1) Applebee's privacy policy AND the fact the pastor wrote this on the RECEIPT, meaning she PAID for the meal.

The customer's privacy wasn't violated. Nothing was posted to indicate WHO it was--no names given. I don't believe Applebee's was right to fire her for doing something anonymously. Read between the lines, not verbatim what has been stated. Reddit users aren't identified by name, the receipt scan had no indication of the person, and the waitress might have done something that some may consider to be in poor taste, but she was insulted by it. The pastor did something in very poor form, IMHO HORRIBLE behavior. Applebee's managers could have DONE NOTHING with the receipt after the meal was paid for...

Nothing in my post mentioned or implied anything to do with race. That's your own short-circuiting brain, the one that doesn't know when the Constitution was ratified, that's making you be a fool.

If a pastor has a meeting at a restaurant with members of her flock, the pastor should pick up the check, male or female, black, white, purple or green. It's called showing CLASS, something you know nothing about.

Then, why the heck do you leftists label any criticism of Obama as racist?

Guess the point flew over your head...like Tonto's arrow.

Cheap preacher who probably tells her flock to give until it hurts. Personally, not sure the waitress should be fired. Read a few accounts of this story and it doesn't appear as if the waitress actually outed her and identified the pastor personally, appears she did what she could to obfuscate the identity of the pastor and to voice her frustration with the pastor.
The pastor engaged in some seriously BAD behavior IMHO by whining basically the waitress didn't deserve a tip! Cheapskate!
I always tip at least 20%, more if there was alcohol served or if superior service provided or if I had asked for some special service. Always treat these people well because face it: they're handling your food, they remember faces very well, and they bust butt on the job. And they don't make minimum wage.
If anyone in the party had a problem with automatic gratuity, they should have asked for separate checks. I don't have any problem tipping above 20% for excellent service. As the story unfolds, this wasn't even this server's table. Everyone needs to remember, the internet isn't private.

Ok, first, if it was a legit policy, the manager could have explained to the customer. Second, if it is policy prefaced by notice, it would be no different then not paying for your meal as it is a legitimate cost involved with the meal service. Third, the manager could have used store funds to cover the difference. Finally, the manager could have barred the person from future entry into the store. There is plenty the manager could have done. But more importantly, it is the manager's job to do whatever was done, not the employees.

Now, you are mistaken on the nothing posted indicating the customers name.
http://localtvktvi.files.wordpress.com/2013/0...
It very clearly says, pastor ales bell on this. It was posted under the heading "My mistake sir, I'm sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries." That right there is enough to can someone. If you can't be rude to a customer in the store, then you certainly can't be rude to them outside it concerning you employment and their patronage.

The fired waitress wasn't even the one who waited the table either. She got what she deserved.

Agreed. I think the issue I have with this is that it really is a NON story. I don't think the waitress showed stellar judgement or discretion, but no one would have known who the characters were unless the pastor opened her mouth. This wasn't an issue of public or national security where the FBI, police, or some other criminal investigation would have had to analyze the digital evidence to determine who made the posting. Nothing criminal occurred. I found the waitress' response hilarious. The pastor's actions were just out of character for a minister of God.

You are probably right, "you" would never have known if the pastor didn't make a stink about it and the girl getting fired. But that is no where near the misinformation you are spewing. Look at the photo.

"...you leftists..."?

Kinda over-generalizing there, aren't you? If you have a valid criticism of Obama, I'll agree with it. If it's not, and 99% of them aren't, that just makes you stupid in my book. And if you make a racist criticism, then I'll call that out. See, I judge each criticism as it comes down the pike. I'm not a lazy butt like you.

Most of the points you make barely make it over my shoetops, but being a legend in your own mind will do that. Thanks for playing, please try again.

Applebee's waitress canned after posting pastor's tip
The receipt shows that Alois Bell scratched out the 18% tip.
Applebees is one of the worst at ripping off their tipped employees. They apply a fixed percentage of sales as tips, whether the server or bar tender actually received that amount or not (in other words, that 18% the customer scratched off the bill WILL show up as being paid to the server (both on her pay stub, and her W-2), even though she never actually got it). They won't let them clock out unless they put in that amount. This results in Applebees CLAIMING they paid their help more than they actually did, lowering their "profit", and thus their taxes. It also increases the employees taxes (or reduces their refund). And if the employee complains, her hours are cut, or she is let go.

The photo appeared cropped there with just "Pastor" viewable.

However, you even have to admit, it's still very poor form on part of the pastor and the waitress didn't even break any company rules.

I didn't claim the waitress was the sharpest knife in the drawer either, but you have to admit, it was funny. Sometimes people do need to be gently poked at in order to obtain a muchly needed attitude re-adjustment.

I wasn't even claiming misinformation, either. A lot of NOTHING when it's all boiled down except that a person lost their job because of someone's hurt feelings.

#1 Automatic gratuity is always stated either on the menu's subtext or the bill's subtext before you pay. You are informed, it's a pretty universal practice.

#2 Sharing the reciept online is wrong, against company policy and practice, and will get you canned...the end. Stories JUST like this have sprung up in the news a lot lately at various establishments, all of which resulted in the employee getting fired, regardless of the other details of the story.

#3 Most of you seem to be ridiculously racist, sexist, elitist, or just snobby trolls... I've scrolled maybe 20 threads from the Upper Arlington area over the last few days, and EVERY single one of them communicates that point. Whether it's how you act at the grocery store, how you treat drivers, or how you treat your pets. Are you really so bored in your day to day lives that you have to elevate those small inconveinances into supposed problems facing your community? Then blaming it on a race, an economic class, a political affiliation, or any other generalization found to hold almost no substance in today's society? Chances are those of you who are snobby, rich, and conservative live RIGHT NEXT to someone who is snobby, rich, and democrat... and down the street from someone who is snobby, poor, and kills cats with anti-freeze because they happened to catch a bird when they escaped one day. You are all sores on the community by building social walls between anyone and everyone you might deem to be slightly different than you.

I can't wait until I get out of this prejudicial place, your prying eyes because of my style of dress, the company I keep, or the contents of my shopping cart got old a LONG time ago.

There is an unwritten rules that the IRS will not audit restaurants if the reported tips average 8% of the wait staffs sales. This isn't just Applebee's that does that. Pretty much everywhere will make the waitress claim 8% of her sales as the amount of tips she received. You are correct in that Applebees is a horrid employer though. In my search for information about their automatic gratuity, I did find several states investigating their use of reduced tip wages (usually half of minimum wage) for non tipped jobs. One state, or maybe it was the feds, is even suiting them over that and it went to either the state supreme court or a federal court because applebee's fought the ability for the lawsuit to go through. It is now back in lower court and proceeding. Your point may be part of the suit also. I didn't check into it that much.

When I worked at restaurants, the waitresses made well more then they reported. Most of them had children and specifically worked as a waitress in order to keep their income down as to qualify for the earned income tax credit. This will likely not be the case for every waitress, but it should on average be less tips reported then received unless they aren't that good of a waitress or the area and restaurant just suck.

I see what you mean about the photo now.

As for the pastor and waitress, yes, I agree what they did was in very poor taste. However, the waitress did break company policy and even if there wasn't a written policy, I would have fired her simply because they are not to retaliate on the customer.

But the waitress definately needed to go. Respondeat superior, the servant's actions reflect on the masters so let the master answer. Someone doing this could have sparked a lawsuit and brought all sorts of legal liability on to the restaurant. It could have sparked a protest from the congregation and a word of mouth campaign about credit card information being used in ways not consistent with data security. The comment made on the post about letting Jesus pay for her bills in response to the pastors comment, if said in person at the restaurant would have gotten her fired too. Posting it on the internet is no different then saying it to the customer.

I'm sorry, I see it justified in so many ways why she lost her job.

The cheap ass in this story is the employer and not the guest. I tip based upon the quality of service and not because some dipshit says I should tip 20%. I am glad the girl got fired maybe she learned a lesson in manners.
