Not saying I agree or disagree with gay marriage, just find it ironic that those so steadfast in their convictions can turn on a dime when it's kin that is affected.
I felt the same way about this when hearing him on the radio this morning, not to mention my first instinct which was "Why do we need to know about your son and who cares?"

I do agree with most of those sentiments, especially the ones about it being DISCOURAGED unless as a LAST RESORT.

He didn't have a choice. His stance prior, when the tide is a changing, Portman had no other option except to explain his change in stance.

Lesson...be careful when you are so staunch on an issue.

No, I'm not aware how laws work. Dumbarse.

Laws based on right vs. wrong...utilize Portman as your example. I oppose gay marriage, wait now I'm for it. When was he right or wrong? Ruminate before you respond.

Leges Juliae (18 BC)– regarding marriage

Moral legislation of Augustus

Under Augustus, the Leges Juliae of 18–17 BC attempted to elevate both the morals and the numbers of the upper classes in Rome and to increase the population by encouraging marriage and having children (lex Julia de maritandis ordinibus). They also established adultery as a private and public crime (lex Julia de adulteriis).
To encourage population expansion, the Leges Juliae offered inducements to marriage and imposed disabilities upon the celibate. Augustus instituted the "Law of the three sons" which held those in high regard who produced three male offspring. Marrying-age celibates and young widows who wouldn't marry were debarred from receiving inheritances and from attending public games.
[edit]Augustan Leges Iuliae

Lex Iulia de Maritandis Ordinibus (18 BC): Limiting marriage across social class boundaries (and thus seen as an indirect foundation of concubinage, later regulated by Justinian, see also below).

Lex Iulia de Adulteriis Coercendis (17 BC): This law punished adultery with banishment.[1] The two guilty parties were sent to different islands ("dummodo in diversas insulas relegentur"), and part of their property was confiscated.[1] Fathers were permitted to kill daughters and their partners in adultery. Husbands could kill the partners under certain circumstances and were required to divorce adulterous wives. Augustus himself was obliged to invoke the law against his own daughter, Julia (relegated to the island of Pandateria) and against her eldest daughter (Julia the Younger). Tacitus adds the reproach that Augustus was stricter for his own relatives than the law actually required (Annals III 24)

Lex Papia Poppaea (9 AD):(to encourage and strengthen marriage) is usually seen as an integral part of Augustus' Julian Laws. The Lex Papia Poppaea also explicitly promoted offspring (within lawful marriage), thus also discriminating against celibacy.

When I read the oped, it seemed as if he had no interest in it prior, and only adopted it for political expiediency.

I won't rip him as pulling this for political gain, but I probably won't vote for him again if he keeps moving left, which I think he will.

I don't like the admiration C's give to dead saints, I don't like the fact that Mary is held almost to the same standard if Christ, I don't agree with not allowing priest to marry or nuns. Besides that, they're ok with me.

By realpolitk, he was correct both times, as he chose the option that benefited him the most.

His denomination may have no issue with it. He'll face that answer later.

Well, unless you got endless buckets of fried chicken, biscuits, greens, green beans, mashed taters, sweet potatoes, and soda, your churches can't handle the hungry like the SNAP program can. Do you have all that at your church?

I look at things from the standpoint of a historical timeline.

Whoever is truest to the original faith is subject to debate, however the Orientals, Copts, Orthodox and Catholics all have legitimate claims to being first and they all hold Mary in very high regard, as do the Muslims I might add.

90% of us are with you on the married clergy. Even my grandmother was on board with that 40 years ago, and she was hard core (Rosary every day, Mass every day if possible.)

My first instinct, as reflected in my original post on this thread, was I laughed. Heck to the no, heck to the no...uh oh, backtrack now that it affects one of my own. I could care less if his son likes to have intercourse with Spooky's retarded skunk. None of my business. If he legislates, vehemently, against it and then finds out the skunk and his son are having an affair, he has no choice but to rethink his position (ha, funny) and come out (ha, funny too) with a different stance (not going there) as he may vote differently in the future.
