CNN's Steubenville Rape Coverage Draws Petition Demanding Apology

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on CNN to apologize for its controversial coverage of the Steubenville rape trial.

The network drew fire on Sunday after many critics said it spent more time focusing on the damage to the lives and the "promising futures" of the two teenagers convicted of raping a girl than on what had happened to the girl herself. Though it was not alone in its emphasis on the boys, CNN received the brunt of the outrage.

The petition, which was posted to Change.org , had received over 30,000 signatures by early Monday afternoon. Petition author Gabriel Garcia tore into CNN:

"That CNN decided to paint the tears of the convicted Steubenville rapists in a sympathetic light and say how their lives were ruined -- while completely ignoring the fact that the rape victim's life is the one whose life was ruined by these rapists' actions -- is disgusting and helps perpetuate a shameful culture in which young people never understand the concept of consent and in which rape victims are blamed and ostracized. Changing that culture must be done brick by brick, and it can start by heaping public shame on this major cable news network and forcing them to admit that they are wrong. Publicly."

Last year, these folks were telling us the GOP was the pro-rape party.

Unbelievable.

Because I don't believe in rape?
No doubt rape is the extent of your sexual contact with women.

I heard today that the DA is going to convene a grand jury to bring forward and attempt to prosecute the witnesses that refused to cooperate in the investigation and trial. I hope he holds to it.

And I hope these two 'juveniles'(the rapists) have ruined their pathetic lives. As for the ones who feel sympathy for them and try to protect them, what goes around, hopefully, will come around.

The hilljacks who live up there have created a culture that permits the kids on that football team to run the town. Juveniles? If they're old enough to have drinking parties and parents permit it, then screw the fact they're "under age." What they did was reprehensible. Those kids are now labeled sexual offenders for life, and have to register as such.

Hey folks, Reader has not chimed in because one the perps was Black!? Dang, I thought she would have been,..."all up on ya'll!".

My bad. That was uncalled for.
The whole episode was outrageous! That could have been MY daughter... iff it were, I would hope I could get on Topix in prison! I am serious!
Peace.

Reader was on another Steubenville thread, she thought that charging them as juveniles was a good idea.

If you can bribe a guard, they might smuggle in a cell phone, you can get on mobile topix I think.

Long time no see. Any normal parent would feed these two perps their own testicles.
Normal parent!? Victim or perp!?
Where are the parent(s)!?
The young men didn't learn this from Sesame Street. Maybe online porn?
Girl underage drinking... Hmmm...

Both cases, PARENTS!!!
Back in the 60's, where I grew up, there was a phrase on tv.
"Parents, it is ten o'clock, do you know where your children are?"

It is sad for all the families involved.

Boom, neither sets of parents were "normal." Trying hard not to skate the line of blaming the victim, but a 16 year old girl at drinking parties out of West Virginia into another state seems to have had a few problems in the parental unit department as well. I do agree there.

Problem with bringing that thought into this discussion is that it removes the focus away from "rape IS rape." Period. That seemed to be an issue with these boys. They didn't seem to think it wasn't rape because well, she didn't complain. She was passed out in her own puke.

That town giving those kids free reign to do as they pleased totally disgusted me, and what really goaded me was the fact they felt "victimized" because these kids got busted committing rape.

If Bill O'Reilly (centrist) said this, he would be fired, if not garroted.

Agreed. Exactly. The definition of rape per the ORC:

http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2907.02

Clear cut. MSNBC should shut down the Ed Show for that crap.
