The stats on this thread and from the government are only a few of the reasons why everything is so botched.
First the Stats say the Elderly are at risk but when they want to take something from the elderly or change a program for the elderly they become the WEALTHIEST SEGMENT.
We then go to the hunger issue. The stats for hunger were in large part obtained by asking such questions as, "Are you hungry, Have you ever missed a meal"?
They will say 1 in 6 people in America are hungry. That would mean to look at a classroom of 30, 5 would be hungry. That's in every classroom. One of every 6 people you work with, pass on the street are hungry.
Every year there is a call for FANS in the summer to help the elderly and poor stay cool. Thousands are given. Where did the ones go from the previous year and by now everyone should have one wouldn't you agree.
Coats for kids. I wore the same one for years as a child.
Americans have gotten use to hand outs and will take them gladly even if it degrades them.
I am hungry right now. Its almost noon.

We have very poor in our family and we know why they are in the position they are in. Why would I think strangers are any different.
We have incentivized and created an industry and called it poverty.
Charity begins at home!!!!!

It's called BUDGETING your MONEY!

Today, kids want everything , yesterday, that it took their parents to worked for, for 30 years.

They're in debt, a way of life, up to their arses, and don't give two sh!ts.

This generation doesn't know the meaning of living within their means and, sacrifice.

What the killer is that the banks, loan co, give them credit.....not knowing if they can pay up.

Parents need to teach responsibility to their kids. Life is not a beach!, but a bitch!

When I was a kid, if you were in the middle or the bottom of the line up, you wore hand me downs! You didn't eat out, your mother made your meals and packed your lunch. It is basically a call for voters for one party, the democratic party! Encourage the dependency, they don't care.

Why is it we always hear about Social Security running out of money, but never welfare?

How many folks would be "disabled" if their choice was work or starve?

It's a shame that food banks/food pantries are often abused by addicts. Let's just hand them a nail for their coffin. When they dont have to decide between food and a fix, it is a no brainer.

The ones who truly need help seem to get the least; and folks who abuse the system live it up. So. Sad.

As of last week SS has a 20-25 billion dollar surplus. Its all scare tactics.

Ditto!
Frankly it's getting old and tiresome.

What about the wasted money on pork?
Billions! Somehow pork is always slipped into a bill to appease certain politicians.
Where's the priorities then?

Yup. Learned it as a kid. It was called "paying yourself first." You put money aside, just a bit, and then you paid your bills and you didn't live beyond your means.

My parents were not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, both were blue collar workers, raising kids in the 60s and early 70s. Both were hit by layoffs, strikes, etc. and never once went on any form of public assistance and paid off their home and sent three kids to Catholic schools through high school and helped us with our college. If one of my parents wasn't working due to layoff, plant shut down, whatever, the other upper their working hours if they could. And they donated to the church, food banks, and other places. Both of my parents were children during the Great Depression, so I'm sure they both understood hardship and poverty. They never lived beyond their means. If income went down, they knew where to cut their expenses so outgo wasn't more than income.

My kids learned the word NO and they're fine, learned the difference between "want" and "need." You need good shoes that will last, but you want those $200 designer shoes. That said, I have no problem with a little luxury in my life and spoiling myself once in a while, but it's not a habit. It's a matter of my personal expectations and knowing how to find the joy in life without a lot of money, too.

Not poor now, but certainly struggled when younger and first starting a family. I took my family's advice: put something aside each payday for those emergencies and for the future, pay your bills on time, live well within your means. But somehow that advice today is shunned and laughed at.

There are people out there who hit a hard spot. If they need assistance, let them have it. But don't encourage it to become a lifelong economic support system.

There truly are really poor people who need assistance. Very poor, unable to work, unemployed, etc.
However, it's the ones who work the system, getting food stamps, and any other kind of help, while they walk around with costly jewelry, clothes, acrylic nails two inches long with nail art, hair braided, and cars, even boats, which I witnessed myself.
The problem is there are not enough watchdogs on the job to keep surveillance on this many people.
The system needs revamping and more stringent laws, rules, whatever, to keep this at a low roar.
Anything free attracts....
Unfortunately it's on the taxpayers expense.

Has it ever occured to you that the one woman you saw had the jewelry BEFORE she probably was laid-off and getting unemployment ins.? And the hair braiding? I guess a person getting SNAP should let their appearance fall apart so no one will even consider them for a position! Should a white woman getting SNAP stop shampooing and rolling her hair? How do you know the woman paid for the fake nails? Maybe a guy paid! How much do they cost...do you know or are you ass-u-ming they're expensive because they look shiny and long?

Wow, he wore the same coat as a child for years! I'd hate to see a child who's 3 fit the same coat when he's 6! The sleeves and shoulders wouldn't look so good, would they? How would you clean it without shrinking and tearing up the coat?
People aren't living the 1950's Appalachia style in the cities.

Very interesting points you bring up here. That same person may be within days of losing their car, home or whatever. Some work the system, surely, but some may have a very recent stroke of bad luck.
