Judge Orders Expanded Ohio Early Voting Schedule

A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked an Ohio law that scales back early voting, ordering the state's elections chief to set additional voting times just ahead of the fall election.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Peter Economus comes in a lawsuit filed by civil rights groups, predominantly black churches and others challenging two early-voting measures in the perennial presidential battleground state.

One is a directive from Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted that established uniform early-voting times and restricted weekend and evening hours. Another is a GOP-backed law that eliminates so-called "golden week" when people could both register to vote and cast ballots.

Ohioans can vote absentee by mail or in person without giving any reason.

The plaintiffs claimed the new rules would make it difficult for residents to vote and disproportionately affect black voters, who, the groups say, are more likely to use the weekend and evening hours to vote early in elections. The state had argued the organizations couldn't prove the rules illegally placed an undue burden on voters. State attorneys had said the changes would help prevent fraud and cut costs for local elections boards.

Economus sided with the plaintiffs, who include the Ohio chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union and NAACP.

In granting their request for a preliminary injunction, Economus characterized the measures' burden on voting as "significant although not severe."

The judge said that having decided to enact a broad early voting system, "Ohio and Secretary Husted may not capriciously change or implement that system in a manner that disproportionately burdens the right to vote of certain groups of voters."

So the cheating is about to begin. No need to verify voter registration information just let them vote, so the black church so the church bus will be burning rubber from county to county so they be vettin dars by hook or by crook.

This makes me so angry, if you are too stupid that you cannot vote on one designated voting day, you shouldn't be voting. If the democrats and black churches want this, they should pay for all additional costs. Makes me sick, I despise democrats, the party of idiots.

Honestly, I cannot stand democrats and I hate ugly, obese, lazy democrats who cannot get up and go vote on one day. I resent paying for this. They can certainly get up and go protest and riot, even when they don't have the true facts.

Tip of the iceberg.

Obama did two points better (66-68) in Cuyahoga in 2012 than in 2008. There is no doubt that it was fraud.

No doubt. That had nothing to do with the GOPs full frontal assault on women and people of color. No, 100% certain it was fraud.

Your projection has 100% to do with you being a self-hating white.

The only assaults on your pet groups are from themselves, not the hapless GOP.

I normally don't do that, George does/did.

What I typically do is to post a link and then 1-3 brief sentences about it.

Original content means that you start a thread, or bring in new sources in an existing thread, all you do is snark.

Well, that didn't take long.

WASHINGTON The U.S. Supreme Court today halted early voting in Ohio scheduled to begin Tuesday.

By a 5-4 vote, the justices blocked an order issued earlier this month by U.S. District Court Judge Peter C. Economus that would have given voters the chance to vote early 35 days before the election meaning Tuesday instead of the 28 days provided by state law.

Early, in-person voting now will begin on Oct. 7 under state law and a directive previously issued by Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted.
