If Fickell truly was surprised that he had to speak, he did a pretty darn good job. He is not a polished speaker or a backslapper type like several of the coaches who spoke yesterday. He's not going to be running for the senate anytime soon. Thank God!
There is no doubt what is on his mind and I pity the player that tries the prima donna act with him. They will only try it once.

Jim Tressel's main criteria for building his staff was hiring good, decent, God fearing, hard working people. Fickell is a good man who given the chance will be a winner. All the "noise" around being the head coach at a place like OSU will take some getting used to. Fick has the luxury of having a pass this year relative to all the typical outside distractions. He has the good fortune to have a staff with great continuity and together with the players all have a chip on their shoulders. It will not shock me if OSU finishes 10-2, 11-1 or even 12-0 and plays in the Big Ten Championship game .....

I actually think coach Fickell will do a very good job with these young men. Not a very polished person with the media, but that doesn't mean he won't get it done on the field. It's really a shame that the ones that did things right will suffer the fate of the last season being negated, and this season a possible bowl ban with maybe more penalties to follow. But coach Fickell seems to have things in perspective, and is controlling what he can, and moving on from what he can't. Good luck coaches, and GO BUCKS!!!

I know this is a little off topic, but haven't heard much about or from the guys that stayed and will be serving their 5 game suspension. Has anybody heard anything about what these guys are doing or whats going on with them. Are they being ridiculed by the team or is it biz as usual. Just interested to know if anybody has any news.

Mark Dantonio said, " I think he'll do a great job, and I expect him to be very successful."

The reality is that he will need to in order to keep the position. People are already calling for Urban Meyer.

I'm hoping Fickell works out. If not, Urban Meyer is not on my short list. Burned out at Florida and retired. While he had big success, the expectations at tOSU are not lower and if anything higher than at Florida. Others will be interested if it comes to that.

Better than having to pause in the middle of his speech to gobble down a Big Mac like the Pillsbury Dough Boy that is running your team.

What we need right now out of a coach is someone who can motivate the players and handle on the field issues. His experience will be just fine for those requirements. I could give a rat's behind how well he does in front of a microphone. That will come with time and is not a urgent priority.
As far as everyone one getting bent out of shape over Hoke calling The Ohio State Buckeyes, Ohio. The Michigan coach knows better, he is from Ohio. I don't care if Hoke calls us dog poop. I care if his team beats us and nothing else matters. It's a football game, not a debate.

Something must be wrong- actually agree with you.

He says OHIO- because BO use to- and it was his way at getting back at Woody and the Ohio fans for saying " That school up North"

OBVIOUSLY, Coack Fickell could use someone to work with on his speaking habits as he OBVIOUSLY likes to use certain words alot. OBVIOUSLY, we all know what those words are, don't we?

Sheesh. What an inarticulate boob of a coach. It is OBVIOUS to me that Coach Fickell needs to go as soon as the last game of this season is over. Let the search go out for a good coach who doesn't so OBVIOUSLY need to learn so much. He seems like a deer caught in headlights who really has no expertise as a head coach of a major college football team. It's OBVIOUS that he needs to be an Asst Coach or he could possibly coach at a small rinky dink college. OBVIOUSLY.

I listened to coach Fickell's question and answer period and have this observation: He is too stiff, He is too serious. He doesn't know how to use a little humor to lighten serious situations. He doesn't tell jokes and he probably can't take a joke either. The kids will not relate to or follow a coach who can't lead. You have to be able to choose your moments and choose your battles. You can't just be Hitler in scarlet and grey and expect everyone to shake in their boots. Seems like a nice guy who is in over his head,

Instead of negative comments, why can't positive things be discussed? The players on OSU are students first and are prone to inconsistent play from time to time. They will follow their coach in his reaction to the up and down swings in the game. His learning experience will make them as proud of him as he is of his players. Focus, fun, and hardwork is what we all need to succeed in life .

Gee, fans listen to him in a press conference and have the ability to judge his coaching. We're not even grading him on public speaking. And you listen to him answer who's questions? I could give a rat's behind how he handles Q & A. Public speaking comes with aquiring the ease and experience. In seminars I gave to my peers from all over Ohio, I got better and better until they were getting more than they paid for. He will too and it's not a top priority.
You are concerned about how well he tells jokes? Did you ever attend a Woody's practice? I did and actually he was in scarlet and grey and at times the players did indeed shake in their boots. Ever hear about Bear Bryant's practices. Do you think they were not leaders? Telling jokes is not leading, it's intertaining.
every coach has or develops his own style of leadership.
With the players he will be at ease and we have no idea how he will relate to them. Maybe at times he will mimic Flippo the Clown, who knows. The kids will follow a football coach if he knows his football business and shows how it relates it to THEM. On one hand you call him Hitler and in another a nice guy. I don't think he has a dual personality.
We fans have no clue as to him being over his head or not and you darn sure can't tell from a Q & A session. With his football experience, he will have the players' respect, a necessary ingredient. He will teach what he expects from the players and show them how to achieve it and it is all that counts for now.
You don't judge a coach by his press conferences. You judge him by the quality he puts on the field, how prepared they are and what they can do with their talents when the whistle blows.
I think we all need a good dose of whistles as soon as possible. We are chasing smoke for now.

The worst and unforgivable actions of the former OSU coach was rigging the giving of prizes to his favorites at his camps. What a disgrace. He has no dignity or pride. I hope that he writes another book.

Whether Luke is a polished public speaker will not determine if he is the right choice as the OSU football coach. Whether he can tell jokes or can take a joke are not traits sought in a new football coach.

He has had outstanding success as the linebacker coach at OSU so his ability to relate to his players already has been established.

In spite of your statements to the contrary, Luke's leadership ability as a the head football coach at Ohio State can not be determined from remarks made to the media. His ability to lead the OSU football program will be demonstrated by how well his team is prepared for each game, how he handles his team under game time pressure and how well the team performs as student-athletes on and off the football field.

Finally, in the future , no more references to Hitler. That remark is repugnant and totally inappropriate in a comment about the new football coach at Ohio State.

Stick to what you know--whether someone is a good joke teller or not.
