2 Charged with Murder after 3 Shot in Downtown Charleston; Victim Identified

by Dave Munday

Two men who have been in jail several times before have been arrested after a fatal shooting in downtown Charleston early Sunday.

Three people were shot about 2 a.m. at 420 Meeting St., Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said. When officers arrived they were told the victims had been taken to hospitals in private vehicles. One of them died at Medical University Hospital, Francis said.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Don’ta Pringle, 20, of Summerville. He died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the coroner’s office.

A man and a woman who also were shot were taken to hospitals with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Francis said.

Police arrested Brian Ancrum, 23, of Tripe Street, and Glendell Gladden Jr., 29, of West Ashley, at a house on Tripe Street and charged them with murder, Francis said.

They were being held in the Charleston County jail Sunday.

Ancrum and Gladden have been in jail several times before, according to Charleston County Court records.

In October 2008, Ancrum was charged with first-offense cocaine possession. He pleaded guilty and was given a year’s probation. He was arrested in September 2011 and charged with possession of cocaine, trafficking cocaine and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The case was not prosecuted.

In April, Ancrum was charged with possession of a stolen handgun and unlawful carrying of a handgun. That charge is still pending.

In September 2006, Gladden was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and cocaine base or meth. He pleaded guilty and was given credit for serving seven months in jail.

In September 2008, Gladden was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine base or meth near a school. He pleaded guilty and was given credit for 269 days in jail.
