Nothing like life experiences to teach you, that is if you live through them.
This young lady has screwed up her life big time. I expect no car to be bought for her, after she gets her drivers Lic back. High insurance premiums for several years, which her family may not be able to afford. Her parents should also shut off her cell phone account, until she can get a job to pay for it.
Lucky she got off so easy, as we all know she could have killed herself, or others.
Texting while driving is worse than driving drunk.

"Texting while driving is worse than driving drunk."

I think there is a big difference between sitting at a stop light sending a quick text and being drunk and blowing through the stop light. People can talk about banning this, but think of all the other things people do in their car that causes them to take their eyes off the road. It's like Naimless says...Common Sense. Is there a big difference between sending a text, or leaning over to get something out of your glove box, or putting on makeup? I'm pretty certain I can send a text quicker than the lady on 315 who is prepping herself for work while driving. In the end it is common sense. I wait until I come to a stop light or stop sign to send a text...or I just wait till I'm at my next destination. Unless it is something that I can just reply "K" too.

No. Absolutely not. Zero. Nada. Is that clear enough for you?

Sitting at a traffic light and texting,... I can't even understand that. You see we have a technology challenge here. It's like illegal downloads. 1 in 100 will be enforced upon.

We need an iron fist law on some things. This is but one. Until you loose a loved one due to this your comments mean nothing. What you are saying is if you were elected what would you expect or push for? If texting while driving at a traffic light fits your agenda then I would not vote you in; period.

Do you understand driving takes 100% attention? What if a semi-tire blows out while you're passing it? What happens if some other person is 'drifting' in their lane or yours while they are texting? It's inevitable people will die. And as I said at the start,... until you can appreciate the full impact of loosing someone from such ridiculous behaviors then and only then will you change your mind. It's a no-brainier. Then again the kids are almost all doing it. The parents can take away their phones when they start getting tickets. I'm sick of this topic. I was driving a motorcycle and this happened. What happened? I was run into the median. By the act of God I didn't loose it. I had years of riding experience was all that saved me.

So,... save the old 'rights' to text while driving. It makes no sense. We've all experienced it and it needs to be enforced. How to enforce it is the issue.

I don't get texting on a cell phone when you can talk on the phone. Keeping your eyes on the road.

Texting is for computers not cell phones. Texting on cell phones is just stupid.

from the day you were born you started to die. no one is getting out of this life alive. so if you die from texting it was ment to be. how many laws do we need. Land of the free. all B.S. always someone wanting to control everything you do. and it's not about safty it's about money. do they send you to a class and teach you how dangerous it is, no they just take money from you. they could careless if you live or die. they just found something else they could use to get there hand in your pocket. should people text while driving, no but there are 1000's of thing they shouldn't do while driving. people die everyday because of bad judgment. it's all apart of life, if they are that concerned about people outlaw driving. get all cars off the road.

Did you really just compare texting to drunk driving. I am not saying it isn't dangerous but I think that is a bit too far. Drunk driving is only one of the most irresponsible and dangerous things a person can do.hmm just don't agree with your comparison there. I might be for the ban, but honestly if you google it, studies show that in the cties with bans, accidents haven't gone down. So I am not sure it is really as bad as everyone might think

I think even talking on a cell phone should be banned. Big question, how are the police going to enforce this? It will be there word against the alegedged textor.

OK. So how does law enforcement tell the difference between when I am texting and when I am talking or for that matter simply using the GPS which comes with my phone? Let's add in that I am traveling between 35 and 50 mph and holding a device the size of a credit card. What happens when texting becomes voice activated so I speak the words that are typed on the screen..is that texting also. Lots of unanswered. This is starting to sound like another red light camera scam to raise more funds on the backs of tax payers. the only people getting rich, politicians and lawyers.

It's not just talking and texting on the phones, it's these people who are shoving food into their mouth while they are driving, or women putting on makeup or these people with dogs in their laps. There should be absolutely no distractions while driving. There are more idiot drivers around here and adding cell phones and texting and all this other crap makes them even worse.

There was a time when we all survived our social network of friends without texting. If people that text absolutely have to text while driving, then I absolutely have to do data inputting on my labtop while I am driving. I am only being sarcasic to all you dedicated texting/driving people.

I was hit by a teenager who was texting while riding my motorcycle. she was too busy to watch what she was doing and it took 6 months of my life to recover. I still am recovering from what an irresponsible teenager did to me. WHat about my rights to be able to be safe on the roads. Those of you who want to text should have to pay extra insurance as well as fines if you cause an accident. That is just plain STUPIDITY for you to do this. SHUT UP AND HANG UP AND DRIVE

Id like to ram these dipwads off the road when I get stuck behind em, so engrossed in texting that they dont go when the light changes, drift off into the other lane. Ticks me off, but yea how to enforce. I say if a Officer catches you the fine is so outrageous that you would never do it again.
You claim it to be fact but where are your sources?

I'm pretty sure there exists some law that is meant to prohibit dangerous behaviors while behind the wheel. Why can't this be enforced under that law. Oh wait, I forgot I don't live in a rational society that uses government time and therefore tax dollars efficiently. So yeah, lets make more laws and strip away freedoms otherwise the terrorists win. That is the post 9/11 America we all live in and do nothing about.

I am not sure what planet you are from, but Pickerington, Ohio and the USA does enforce the laws on drugs, rape, murder and immigration. As far as I know there is no law against racism, people can choose to feel how they want about people in this country...like it or not. It seems like you are confusing enforcing with preventing in advance...which is impossible since law enforcement is not in the psychic business.

Personally I think that the driving age should be raised to 18 in this state. Kids today are not mature enough to have the privilege of driving. Secondly, I think that texting and cell phone use in cars should be banned...period. Adults as well as teens cannot effectively drive and use a cell phone/text while driving. People went decades without this technology and got by just fine. If you need to use the phone pull off the road and use it, but do not do it while driving.

That we actually have to have law banning texting while driving is riduculous. Like McDonalds has to put a warning on the cup to tell your coffee is hot. DUH!!! Is it just me or are we becoming a stupid nation? Does anybody have any common sense left? I personally don't think you should even talk on the cellphone unless you have a hands free device. It's just common sense.

Don't we already have statewide "distracted driving" laws?

It seems to me that if that existing law were applied appropriately, texting would fall into that category. The police should enforce it that way, and we don't need ANOTHER law on the books.

As to the teenager? Thank God she got this hard earned lesson, and didn't seriously hurt herself or anyone else in the process. Sounds like she got the message loud and clear.

There have been numerous studies about this. Texting while driving lowers your reaction time more so than driving under the influence.

I'm all for limited government. However, I support texting and driving being banned statewide. If you get into an accident and texting was involved, you should be charged with reckless endangerment.

As for the "what about when you can speak and it will type it out for you" guy, well then that really isn't "texting" is it? You'd be "speaking".

Sad truth. I'm not worried about the smart ones. It's the stupid ones that think it is a good idea to text and drive, like this Sarah girl. I'm glad they suspended her license for 6mos, and I'm glad she got the crap beat out of her. She lived to tell about it and learn from her MISTAKE, and thankfully didn't injury anyone else. The driving test really should be much more difficult.

Statewide Ban and ban all cellphone use while driving and make it a primary offense. Pickerington PD likes to write tickets on freeway and that could cause an issue if they write texting tickets out there when it's not illegal in rest of state.
