Just one more thing for confession, I guess. Why live right when you can just say you're sorry.
If taking care of your family isn't living right, then I guess life is all for naught.
We know you lefties hate the thought of some of us not being dependent on your sainted government.

Speaking of jealous leeches, you sure are that! You see Obama's name & you gotta post a reply. Hey I hope the meltdown in the brain clears your blood clot. I hear they want your brain for dog food over in Japen, but it's gotta be healthy. Nope, I'm now Walt, I'm not LiG, I'm not Pale Rider, I'm not anyone that you have gueesed in the past. I'll give you a hint: I used to agree with you 2 years ago.
What's it take to go from normal to a complete Obama-tard in two years? A glioma?

I think your God will have more of a problem with your "I don't care if they starve" comment. 5 Hail Marys.

<quoted text>No, Reader. We have assets, educations and skills. And should those fail us, we have extended families. You see, that's the way it's supposed to be. You leftists have tried to tear it down for 50 years. Well, some of us did the right things in life.
Pride goeth before the fall.

Remember "right-sizing"? Lotta folks just like you, educated, experienced, skilled, with assets and families, found themselves to be nothing more valuable than an excess commodity in a crowded marketplace.

If I were ten years younger I might be worried. As of today, I only have ten years left in which I have to work out of necessity. One kid is an adult, the other will be in 18 months. My survival isn't in jeopardy, but as I said, I'm "lucky" to be the age I am with the resources I've set aside.

Where do you find that in the Bible, exactly?

It's derived from several verses, among them:

Matthew 7:8, "For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened."

2 Thessalonians 3:10, "For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."

Your verse from Matthew seems to indicate the opposite of what you were suggesting--that God's assistance is available to all who ask.

But the Thessalonian citation is frequently misused to justify denial of help to those who need help. If you read the entire context, you will realize that it was a warning against idleness among the church elders--pointing out particularly that they are not above humble tasks.

The Thessalonian passage does NOT address to whom, or on what conditions God's help is available.

God does not tell the people to harvest everything and then simply give food to the poor. Instead, He tells them to leave enough of the grain to allow the poor to work for themselves. Work has a way of giving us a sense of purpose, productivity, and dignity.

Then income derived from capital gains and investment must be the devil's work?

In so doing, there is an affirmation of the responsibility of those in a position of ownership to provide something to support those less comfortably provided for. There was also a prescribed amount (first fruits) to be given to the Temple, for its support.

I don't in any way dispute the value of work and productivity in terms of human dignity. However, I do not see the "God helps those who help themselves" folks doing much in terms of responding to either basic need or the need for human dignity. In other words, they see no responsibility to provide grain, whether harvested for poor people or left for them to harvest.

Even the notion that a days work should pay a fair day's wages is viewed with skepticism. The prevailing view is that an employer should be free to pay whatever wage desperate people are forced into accepting, justified by the notion that if they really want to do better they will leave and find better work somewhere else--or make themselves more valuable by getting a higher level of education.

Washington Gladden's Social Gospel dealt heavily with the Christian responsibilities of owners and employers. His belief was that Christian action, rather than socialism, would best serve the needs of the poor and working class.

And if you were to be robbed of those final ten years, your life would begin to look quite different.
