Mrs. rowdy has a kindle and its amazing what is available on the free list. No clue why it took me so long, but just finished reading Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle". A great book for the most part, but when he gets deeply into socialism, its hard not to toss it back onto the shelf.

That's basically what I do. I find it hard to read the Kindle because I have to take off my bifocals to do so. Age is a biatch. Plus I noticed I've been limiting my exposure to digital stuff more lately. I'm finding the laptop, cell phone, Kindle to be more of a distraction that a help. But may be just me. I work on a computer all day long and the eye strain is bothersome.
Sometimes I buy print just because I love to highlight or make notes in the margins LOL.
Sounds like you're ready for progressive lenses. Mine took forever to get used to.

Incredible the amount of free stuff, isn't it? That's probably 90% of what's on my Kindle. Lot's of it recently is "bait" material...short novellas for $4.99 or less that will progress as series of print books. Pretty slick marketing idea.

<quoted text>The fifth and final volume is due out in 2015. You can read the first four now...they came out in 1982, 1990, 2002 and 2012. They are a daunting read; by the time the fifth volume comes out, the total page count will be around 5000...in hardcover.
I put them on my wish list......they have a 4 book set offer.....
I do what you do. Free or cheaper books on kindle or iPad.
Seldom though.

That's probably about the time I had to go to bifocals, have worn corrective lenses since I was 30. I wore contacts until I needed bifocals, then the expense wasn't worth it. Medications have taken a toll on my eyes, had to have lens replacement surgery on my right eye in March, probably will get the left one done before too much longer.

My brother has been wearing coke lenses since he was in his 30's.
I, on the other hand, injured my eye, by coughing and vomiting so hard last year. It is still blurry, with a huge black floater. Doc said he can fix it, by SUCKING out the floater....for some reason, sucking regarding my eyeball didn't entice me to do the procedure. Going next month for checkup.
I'm so sorry to hear about your eyes.
Meds help one thing and damage another. I only take meds when necessary.

Anything by Somerset Maughm, one of my fave authors in college. He wrote a lot of short stories, too. So always a good choice if you don't want to read something involved. My favorite stories by him are Of Human Bondage, Rain, Three Fat Women of Antibes, and The Unconquered. The last two are short stories. Rain was also made into a movie with Joan Crawford in 1932...awesome movie if you can find it.

H.L. Mencken. Love him, hilarious. Either In Defense of Women or Damn, A Book of Calumny.

If you like "futuristic" al la Animal Farm or 1984, Ayn Rand's Anthem is there as well. Short story, but really good.
I haven't checked if all of Maughm's short stories are up there, but I know most of his work has been out of the public domain for a while now. Search on the site for any of the classics, you'll probably find them there--Jane Austen, Thoreau, Plato, Socrates, Shakespeare...

I've been Mr. Magoo since I was a kid. I have a minor congenital condition which makes my eyes also more sensitive to bright light.

I injured my eye this summer. My electric toothbrush went berserk and spat toothpaste in my eye. My eyeball was actually bruised. Looked like a freak for a week or so--my whole eye was red!!

Good luck with the eye!

With the advances in eye surgery as of late, you have very little to worry about. I was shocked at the outcome of my surgery. No pain or swelling and my vision was like 3D the next day.

I know, but I have always been squimish when it comes to the eye!
You must have a wonderful doc, because I know a few people who had awful after effects from surgery.
I have a new doc and he is great!

Do you read Dan Brown? His new book is good.....INFERNO

Tip: Books on Abraham Lincoln should be displayed only in a guest bathroom.
Books on Barack Obama, on the other hand, make great kindling when bundled with Korans.

I've had that happen, but assumed it was effects after a Hot date.
