Trying to justify it by saying "A six figure income should not surprise anyone" is denial of the words of The Bible. Are not pastors supposed to be walking examples of the Bible they preach from?
You obviously skipped the Book of Job, among other biblical writings.
Believers do not take a vow of poverty.
In fact, how could one living in poverty be of any aid to another in poverty?

Speaking of liturgical clergy, I had odd experiences in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem when I was a young man.
On one occasion, a Syriac priest tried to beat the snot out of me because he caught me going into the entrance of Jewish catacombs accessed from the back of his chapel. It is only because his altar was free-standing in his chapel that I didn't get the crap kicked out of me because he chased me around the altar a couple times before I was able to dart back out the door. There are some advantages to being 18 years old.
On another occasion, I was standing in a long pilgrim line outside the Tomb of Jesus chapel...to go in. All of a sudden this Armenian priest comes out of nowhere and takes me by the arm and hustles me up the line and into the chapel...like I'm somebody important who gets special treatment. I was just utterly dumbfounded. The Greek Orthodox priest sitting in the chapel was pissed...The Greeks and Armenians don't like each other. Anyway, after a few moments of "silent reflection", the Armenian priest grabs my arm again, and out we go. Then he drags me into his nearby Armenian chapel office and just demands that I give him money for the special treatment. So...I gave him some money. And then he said, "more". I gave some more. And, he said "thank you very much".
Being young, I was sort of just shell-shocked. The dude shook me down in the holiest church on the planet.
That sucks.
It appears as though both priests read you fairly well.

Back to my classmate, I am amazed at how he exempts himself from his own condemnation. It's like the Republican politician who goes to war against welfare/food stamps....and then we find out that, yep, he/she was on welfare and foodstamps years ago...but somehow THAT doesn't count. I just don't get that.

In the history of churchly theology, there was Anglican cleric Thomas Malthus. He, a priest, taught that poverty was God's way of population control. Malthus adopted Darwin and the survival of the fittest concept...and just imported it into the Church. So, many have been swayed by that thought...don't feed them...they deserve to be hungry and die. If you feed them, you are giving away food that belongs to the "good" people favored by God.

That sucks.

Or maybe Darwin used Malthus...Darwin was older...but, they were contemporary to each other for about 25 years. But overall, there were many at that time playing around with natural law/survival of the fittest ideologies. Such ideologies were connected also to emerging racist ideologies.

As I understand it, your friend is condemning fraud/abuse of the system, and not the system itself. All taxpaying Americans would like to see fraud eliminated from all public assistance programs.

In your eternally skewed social justice quest, you interpret any condemnation of wealth redistribution as condemnation of Jesus Christ.

Newsflash, "Pastor" Jonah: Jesus Christ did not descend from Heaven to die a horrific death so that all people on Earth would have full bellies.

The pastors I'm talking about paid cash.

Book of Job is the story of a man and his suffering and his challenge to God. Which speech from this book are you referring to, Eliphaz? Bildad? Zophar? Elihu?

How does this tie into false pastors driving a S 550?

I am sure that the way you describe the difference is how he sees it. But, then we would have to trust in whatever he claims is his personal virtuosity. How do I really know that he doesn't abuse the system. But, beyond the system, in our last conversation he was just rather trashing any attention to the poor. I pointed out to him that Lutheran Social Services have counselors in their food pantries who go over folks' household budget with them and then give them real world info on what services they are qualified for here and there...according to the system. I suggest to him that local ministerial associations could replicate that...instead of just begrudgingly responding in ad hoc band-aid ways to those brave enough to enter a church unannounced asking for help with something. His response was, "Oh, it's not worth the time and bother...you don't get any money out of doing stuff like that. You give those people money or food...and they don't give anything back."

But, apparently my classmate is quite convinced that he is most assuredly worth the time and bother. Pastors suck.
